Description

June 29 19 26. v E. M. HARRIS COMBINATION CONTAINER Filed Jan. 6, 1926 Ed ward M Harris ATTORNEY muy WITNESS:
I tainer 10 havin Patented June 29, 1926.
v UNITED STA EDWARD M. HARRIS, or n vnnsinn, NEW J RSEY.
COMBINATION CONTAINER.
Application filed January This invention relates to screw cap con tainers, and more particularly to a combination container and cutting blade or knife which isexteriorly hinged to the bottom or closed metal cap portion of a tubular container, and adapted to be folded therein when not in use. The principal object of the invention is to provide'a container which is commonly used for vending a flexible commodity, such as sheet rubber patching material, with a foldable cutter or knife, which is hinged exteriorly of the bottom end and adapted for cutting portions of said .material, and using the container as a gripping member.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container as specified, whichhas an elongated slot in its bottom end for normally receiving a blade/which is hinged exteriorly of and at one end of the slot, and adjacent the perimeter'of the flanged bottom member for limiting the opening movement of the blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination container with a hinged cutting blade which is adapted to be normal- 'ly positioned inwardly of the container by means of a slot in the bottom end thereof,
and said cutting blade provided with an offset ear for limiting the inward or closing movement of the blade, and a protruding indentation at the side of the blade, midway between the offset ear and the cutting edge for retaining the said blade in its closed normal position.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detail description, and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1-is a view in elevation of the container with the cutting blade in open position.
Figure 2is a longitudinal section through the container with the cutting blade shown closed in full lines and extended in dotted line. 7
Figure 3-is a plan view of the bottom end of the container showing the blade hinged thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the-combination container and cutting member therefor comprises a tubular cona metal screw cap 11 at its top end 12 thereof, and a bottom metal cap 13 which is fixedly secured to the bot tom end of the tubular portion 14-. of the con- 6, 1926. Serial No. 79.658.
tainer10. The bottom metal capl fwhich is provided in my invention, comprises a flanged metal cap which is provided centrally with an elongated slot 15 which eX- tends across the bottom 16 of the cap 13, and each end of said slot extends adjacent to the flanged rim 17 of the bottom cap '13.
Pivotally attached to and outwardly of the bottom 16 0f thecap 13, at one end of the slot 15, is a hinged pin 18 adapted for hingedly receiving thereon, a hinge barrel 19 formed on one end of the cutting blade 20 and sald blade positioned on said pin on the longitudinal center line of the slot 15, and adapted to be normally positioned. in .said slot and extending inwardly of .the bot-,
tom 16 when not in use. Its inward or closing movement is limited by. a laterally extending ofl'set car 21 which is formed on the upper edge of the blade 20, for engagement on the bottom surface 16 adjacent one edge of the slot 15. The cuttingblade 20 is furan indentation 23 which protrudes from one side of the blade 20 for engagement against one edge of the slot 15 when the blade is being placed in its normally closed position, and said indentation adapted to extend inwardly of the slot 15 for frictional engagement on the inner surface of the bottom 16 immediately adjacent one edge of said slot for retaining said cutting blade in its normally closed position Similarly, when the cutting blade 20 is withdrawn from the slot 15, and in an upwardly and rearwardly extended position, the top edge of the blade 20 will engage and bear against the flange rim 17 of the cap 13, when in use for cutting purposes. p
From the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that when it becomes necessary to cut a portion of any flexible material from the entire piece contained in the described container, it is only necessary ther provided intermediate the offset ear 21 r and the cutting edge 22 of the blade 20, with j desire to be limited in any manner, except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended;
What I claim is: 1. In combination with an a-nnula-rl-y flanged bottom closnre disc for a cylindrical container including a removable screw cap therefor, of an elongated rectangular slot in said closure disc a cutting blade having a hinged blade formed on one end thereof at right" angles thereto hingedly connected to the underside of said bottom closure disc adjacent one end of said slot and centrally therewith, said blade adaptedior folding placementin said slot, the annular flange on said closer-e disc formed to extend outwardly at right angles to said bottom closure disc and adanted for limiting the openingmovement 01' said cutting cuttingblade for retaining said bladein said slot in normally folded position.
2. In combination with the lOOtiODl end of a tabular container, an elongated rectangin lar slot in said bottom member, a cutting blade hingedly connected to the underside blade, and laterally progecting means termed on one side of said of said bottom end, adjacent one end of said slot centrally therewi h, said cutting blade adapted for toldable placement in said slot, means for retaining said cutting blade in said slot, a laterally extending'ear formed on said cutting blade, for limitingrtlie closing movement of said blade, and an annular flange on said bottom end for limiting the opening movementoi said blade.
In combination with the flanged bottom end of a tubular contain r, a cutting blade hingedly connected to the underside of. said bottom end, an oblong slot in the bottonr or said end, said blade hingedly positioned centrally with said slot adjacent one end thereof, said slot provided for folda ble In testimony"whereof I al'iix my signature.
