speccaton of Letters Patent. Patented llfty 9, 1922.
.application led October 18, 192,0, `Serial No.,417,597.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known `that I, JOSEPH J. CANNON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Clair, in the county of St. Clair and .State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinto the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to containers or cartons more particularly designed for the holding of table salt and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the lid or cover and the manner of securing the same on the container or carton, as hereinafter set forth.
ln the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of aportion of the container of my-improved construction Figure 2 is a side elevation; and
Figure 3 is an elevation illustrating the manner of pouring the contents from the container.
A is the body of the container. preferably -of cylindrical form and preferably formed of paper or ber stock. B is a lid or cover which is formed lwith a depending flange C for telescopically engaging the end of the body. To permit of discharging the contents of the box without the necessity of completely removing the cover,.the latter is scored along a line D and the flanges C are severed in line with the score, as indicated at E. This divides thecover into two segments, one of which is permanently fixed to the body by gluing or otherwise securing` the flange section C thereof, while the other segment F is free to hinge along the scored line D. Thus to discharge the contents the segment F is permitted to swing outward until an opening G is formed between the lower edge of the flange C2 and the upper edge of the bgdy. This opening, as shown in Figure 2, is in the form of a slit, the length of which can be varied by the degree to which the segment F is opened.
lVith the construction as described, pouring of the salt into a narrow-necked receptacle is greatly facilitated, for the width of the stream may be limited as desired by controlling the opening of the segment F. The
construction therefore overcomes a defect in the ordinary carton where the cover is completely removed, for 1t is impossible to pour from such a full receptacle without spilling more or less of the material at the sides of the receptacle being filled.
When the container is used for shipment, the hinge section of the lid may be held from opening by any suitable sealing means,
Another important advantage of this construction is that it permits the insertion of.
the hand into the carton to remove the contents thereof with a spoon or cup. Thus the same carton may be used for the filling of narrow-necked containers or as a supply from which the contents may be removed in other ways.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
l. In a container or carton, the combination with a circular body. of a circular hinged lid or cover therefor, and Aa segmental flange on said cover for overlapping said body and limitingv the width of the pouringv opening.
2. In a `container or carton, the combina-v tion with a circular body, of a circular lid or cover hinged thereto and provided with aV depending segmental flange for overlapping thev body the purpose described.
3. In a container or carton,'the combination with a cylindrical body, of a lid or cap therefor provided with a depending flange for telescopically engaging the body, a segment of said lid being xedlv secured to said body and another segment being hinged thereto. y
4. in a container or carton, the combination with a cylindrical body, of a lid or body therefor having a circular top and a depending cylindrical flange for telescopically engaging the body, said top being sco-red and said liange being severed in line with the scoring to divide the lid into two segments, one of said segments being iiXedly secured to the body.
5. In a container or carton, the combination with a cylindrical body, of a lid or cap therefor having a circular top and a depending cylindrical flange for telescopically engaging the body, said top being scored to divide the same into segments, one of which is Xedly secured to the body and from the lineof the hinge, for:
its flange xedly secured to the body inld the laigei1 segment forming a hinged T. In e. container or carton, the e01nbination with e body7 of a hinged lid or cover therefor, and e flange on Said cover overlapping said body end adapted When swung .outward to form a progressive opening enlarging in transverse directions.
In testimony Whereo1 I aix my signature.
JOSEPH J. GANNON.
