MEN
IIIHI l Q wmlissg I UNITED STATEs PATENT QFFICE,
PETER CASEY, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRlDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,077, dated January 26, 1875; app lication filed November 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER CASEY, of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a view of the bit, shown partly in section. Fig. 2 shows one of the side pieces, looking from the line 00 00.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A are the side pieces of the bit. B is a stationary bar, by which the two parts A A are rigidly connected. 0 is the movable bar, which is the main part of the bit. The side pieces A A pass through mortisesin the ends of the bar 0, and the bar is fastened to the side pieces by means of set-screws D D. The side pieces are provided with one or more holes, E, which receive the ends of the setscrews, so that the bar is securely held in place. The driving-lines are attached to the loops F F of the bar 0. G is a circular groove in the bar 0, which admits a portion of the stationary bar 13, where the two bars are placed in contact, as when driving an orderly and well-broken horse.
WVith a bit constructed in this manner, if the horse is unruly it is only necessary to move the bar 0 to enable the driver to have complete control over him, and also to prevent the horse from running out his tongue, as man y horses do'When-in the harness.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bar 0, carrying the loops F and adjustable to any fixed point upon the side bars A, in combination with said side bars A and rigidly-connecting bar B, as and for the purpose specified.
PETER CASEY.
