This invention relates to an improved type of clip capable of general use, but particularly adapted for use by hair dressers in connection with the permanent waving of hair.

j One of the objects of this invention is'that of providing a clip the parts of which may readily be locked against movement and retained in such condition, but which, when desired, may also be unlocked withfacility. A further object is that of constructing u device of the character stated which will firmly grip without injury to the hair or other substance or material disposed between its jaws.

An additional object is that of constructing a clip the parts of which will not readily be broken or disarranged, and which will additionally efficiently accomplish the purposes for which it is intended, aside from the fact that a clip embodying the improved Aconstruction of the present invention maybe readily manufactured and assembled with facility. Other objects ofthe invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.

The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

It will be noted in the illustrated embodiment that a pair of jaws is utilized which are pivotally connected as at 14. One of these Vthe present instance includes a body jaws includes a single sheet of material 10, and the second of the same embraces a pair of plates 11 and 28, which are spaced from j each other. The inner or adjacent edges of the jaws are curved to provide gripping portions, as at 12, 13, and in order to move the jaws .towards each other i. e., into gripping position, the outer end of the jaw 10 may be extended to provide a handle 15, while the similarends of the plates l1 and 28 are also extended as at 16-29, in order to provide a second handle.

With a view to guiding the movements of the jaws and retaining the same against an accidental release a locking mechanism is utilized, and it is preferred that this mechanism include pawl and ratchet members. Thus, the jaw which includes the plate 10 may be extended as at 17 and have its outermost edge provided with a series of teeth 18 to provide a ratchet. As a consequence, the extension' 17 will enter the space between the plates 11 and 28 upon the handles 15 and '16-29pbeing moved towards each other, and in order to properly guide the movements of the parts the edges of these plates may be struck out to providel guiding- lips 30 and 31 at the point adjacent which the end-of the extension 17 will enter. A pawl is associated with the second jaw, and this pawl in 21 adapted to cooperate with one of the teeth 1,8 in order to look the parts. The pawl 21 forms a part of a lever 20, which is disposed and movable within the space extant beas at 22, at which point it is acted upon by a spring 23 anchored as at 24 and 25 between the plates last mentioned, it being further Aobserved that the inward movements of the paw] are preferably limitedl by a stop 26 l which may form a part of the plate 11. will be obvious that the lever 20 may be extended to provide ahandle 27 similar tothe handles 15 and 16-29, in'order to eiiect a deliberate retraction of the pawl.

The operator may thereupon releasethe handle portions, and the parts will remain in the position to which he has thrown them by virtue of the lock structure provided for this purpose.

During the movements of the jaws towards each other the parts will lbe elliciently guided, and the movements of the plates limited to a single plane. Likewise, when it is desired to release the jaws it is not necessary to spring the same axiallyin different directions, but, rather, an operator, by simply moving vthe handles 27 and 16-29 towards each other by pressing his Hngers upon the outer faces of these handle portions, will eiect a retraction of the pawl 21, and, incident to the inherent tendency of the vtube 35 and the strand of hair within the same to expand, the jaws will ily open. In connection with the operation of the device it is to be noted that the clip will not pull the hair or injure the same, due to the housed toprevent the hair or any material gripped thereby'from being caught by this mechanism. It will also be understood that when the parts are to be released they will do so virtually in an automatic manner, it being unnecessary to jerk the device, with consequent discomfiture to the person whose hair is being treated.

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the objects of this invention are accomplished, and since certain changes may be .made in the above construction, and different embodiments of the invention could be made, without departing from the scope thereof, it it intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accom-l matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A clip connected jaws, means to lock said jaws in grippin position, and a pair of radial handle mem ers carried by one of said jaws and movable one toward the other to release said locking means.

2. A clip including a pair of movably connected jaws, a handle on each of -said jaws for moving the same in gripping position, means operative in response to said movement to lock said jaws in said position, and a handle associated with said means and arranged for cooperation with one of the aforesaid handles for releasing said locking means.

3. A clip including a pair of movably connected jaws each comprising a strip of metal formed with a gripping edge and bent at one end to provide a handle, means to lock said jaws in gripping position, and a handle associated with said means and lnovable adjacent one of the aforesaid handles to release said locking means.

4. A clip comprising a pair of .movably connected jaws, one of said jaws comprising a pair of members spaced vfrom each other to provide a recess, and the other of said jaws beingA formed with ratchet teeth, a member pivotally mounted within said recess, and a. pawl `carried by said pivotally mounted member and arranged for cooperationwith said teeth to lock said jaws in operative position. i

5. 6.
