UNITED STATES ADAM ANDREOTTI, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HINGE.
uApplication filed July 11, 1925. Serial No. 42,968.
This invention relates to trunk hinges and has for its object the provision of means to prevent an overhang of the trunk cover when same is opened.
1With the ordinary hinge when the trunk cover is opened there is an overhang which corresponds to the depth of the cover. In a closet or in an automobile where space is limited it is very often necessary to move the trunk away from the wall or sometimes move out the trunk in order to open the cover. To eliminate this inconvenience this improved hinge has been devised.
Other objects will appear as the disclosure progresses. The drawings are intended merely to indicate a possible embodiment of the invention. It is obvious that the actual needs of manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical changes. It is therefore not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated, but rather to deiine such limits in the appended claims.
For a more detailed understanding of the invention, attention is now called to the drawings in which a preferred embodiment is shown illustrated. In these drawings, like parts are designated by like reference characters in all the views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a trunk showing the hinges applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar view as Fig. l with the cover in an opened position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view oiE the hinge.
Fig. 4 is a View of the hinge, partly in section, in an opened position.
Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 are perspective views of the cooperating members.
Referring to the drawings iii-detail, numerals 1 and 2 designate the co-operating members of a trunk corner hinge made in accordance with my invention. The upper member consists of a plate 3 having its side 4 turned down at right angles to the said plate and the lower edge 5 of the turned down plate 4 cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the plate 3. Integral with the upper member 3 are a pair of ears 6 and between them is a stop 7.
The lower member 2 consists of a plate 8 having its side 9 bent over at right angles to the said plate and the upper edge 10 of the turned 4down plate 9 cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the face or the plate 8. Integral with the plate an ear 11 is provided.
Numeral 12 represents the pintle for joining the two co-operating members 1 and 2 together and 13 the usual bolt or rivet holes.
As noticed in Fig. 2 the two sides of the trunk 14 and 15 have upward sloping edges 16 and 17 at the rear which corresponds to the slope 10 of the lower hinge member 2. The rear of the side pieces 18 and 19 of the cover are cut at a slope as at 20 and 21 which corresponds to the slope 5 of the hinge member 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a trunk hinge in combination, upper and lower members, the upper member comprising a plate having bent over sides at right angles to the said plate, the lower edge of the bent over side cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the face of the said plate, the lower member comprising a plate having a bent over side at right angles to the second mentioned plate, the upper edge of the last mentioned bent over side cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the face of the last mentioned plate, co-operating ears integral with both of said plates, and a pintle for joining the said upper and lower members together, meeting edges of the said bent over sides `being at an angle of 45 degrees with the top face of the upper member, the apex of the said angle being at the central axis of the said pintle.
2. In a trunk hinge in combination, upper and lower members, the upper member comprising a plate having bent over sides at right angles to the said plate, the lower edge of the bent over side cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the face of the said plate, the lower member comprising a plate iaving a bent over side at right angles to the second mentioned plate, the upper edge of the last mentioned bent over side cut substantially at an angle of 45 degrees with the face or" the last mentioned plate, co-operating ears integral with both of said plates, a
