COVERED JOINT HINGE Filed June 4, 1935 a \NVENTOR 1 Josflw 6065 ATTORN Patented Dec. 3, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 12 Claims.
This invention relates to what are commonly termed covered joint hinges designed primarily for use in connection with motor vehicles wherein the joint of the hinge is partially concealed and protected against the elements; and the object of the present invention is to provide means for enlarging upon the bearing or supporting area of a hinge butt upon its support to provide a more secure attachment to the support and to elimimate to a greater degree, the stress or strain upon the screws or bolts employed in attaching the butt to its support. In other words, the object of my invention is to provide one or more large portions of the hinge butt, within the boundaries of the support, with a projecting flange or flanges which extend beyond the normal boundaries of a conventional attaching plate of the butt onto an adjacent surface of the support; a further object being to provide a hinge butt, the hood portion of which includes an extending top and bottom wall providing a cover for the edges of both butts of the hinge outwardly of the respective supports when the hinge is in closed position, and further in stamping or forming from the waste metal of the blank necessary to construct a hinge of this type, the additional bearing or reinforcing flanges at the upper and lower edges of the butt; a further object being to provide ahinge butt having the reinforcing and bearing portions defined wherein the butt is composed of separate sheet metal parts arranged one directly upon the other and wherein one part constitutes the hood or cover for the joint of the hinge; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional plan View showing a hinge made according to my invention mounted in connection with a stationary support and swinging member.
Fig. 2 is a face View of one butt of the hinge indicating the other butt in an open position and partly in section; and,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge detached with the butts in open position.
In the construction shown, I provide a hinge consisting of a hood butt part 5 commonly referred to as the female member of the hinge and a butt part B commonly referred to as the male member of the hinge. The butt 5 is composed of an inner part 1 having at one end portion thereof curled pintle bearings 8 at the upper and lower 5 edges thereof and an outer part or shell 9 having a curved hood portion I0 at one end thereof which partially encircles the bearings 8 and which includes, in the construction shown, top and bottom walls H, I la which extend inwardly 10 to the desired degree to meet the outer surface E2 of the support l3 so as to cover the edge portions of the butt 6 when said butt is in closed position as is indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The pintle pin M of the hinge extends through 15 the top and bottom plates I I, I la, the pintle bearings 8 and the curled pintle bearings 6a of the butt 6 to provide the hinge mounting of said butts 5 and 6 one with respect to the other.
Heretofore, in the construction of hinges of the 20 type under consideration and especially butts similar to the butt 5 herein disclosed, it has been customary to cut away the side edges of the shell part 9 inwardly of the inner ends of the walls ll, Ha. Instead of destroying or disposing of 25 this waste material, it is the purpose of my invention to shape or bend such side portions to form laterally extending attaching and reinforcing flange portions l5, |5a at the inner ends of the walls ll, Ila and portions l6, lfia extending longitudinally of the butt inwardly of the flanges 15, I511. These flanges extend onto the surfaces lZa and !3a respectively of the support l2, IS in the manner indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing and may be welded, riveted or otherwise 35 secured thereto, or, if desired, may simply be disposed adjacent such surfaces to provide a wider bearing area of the butt upon the support. I may also provide the inner end of the outer shell part 9 with a projecting flange ll adapted to overlie the inner surface !3b of the support 13 to also aid in this mounting and to further reinforce the attachment of the butt to the support. It is understood in this connection that screws or other devices may be passed through the apertures l8 provided in the attaching plate portion of the butt 5 or the respective parts thereof.
While I have shown the butt 5 as provided with flanges l5, l6 and n, it will be understood that all of these flanges need not be employed in every installation, as in some cases, one flange alone. for example the flange l5, may be employed, or the flange !6. By reason of the manner of constructing these flanges, the same may be cut up into any desired length or to any number of parts to suit specific requirements in the different installations.
By constructing the hinge butt in the complete manner shown, from this position it may be further shaped or formed to suit specific requirements, and these may be varied as to the opposed edges of the butt. My invention is not limited to the particular type and structure of the hinge butt herein disclosed, as this is merely illustrative of one method of carrying the invention into effect. It will be understood that the length of the plate I I and its companion plate I la may be varied to suit the requirements in different installations.
