At this time the outer end portions of the tongues 14 and 15 and the whole of the portion 12 are without the confines of the sheets of paper.

In Fig. 3 the sheets of paper are shown as having been folded along the line D which is oblique to the side edges B and C and is defined by the edges 18 and 19 of the tongues 16 and 17. In said Fig. 3, no part of the blank 10 is below the sheets of paper or the like, the tongues 16 and 17 being inserted between the uppermost sheet and the folded over part E thereof.

In Fig. 4 the tongues 14 and 15 are shown as having been sprung about the side edges B and C of the sheets of paper, so that now the portion 11 is at a corner of the sheets adjacent the line of fold D, the neck 13 and the portion 12 are upon the upper side of the sheets, the tongues 16 and 17 are inserted between the uppermost sheet and the folded over part E thereof, and the tongues 14 and 15 are upon the lower side of the sheets. Thus the sheets are securely locked between the neck 13, the tongues 16 and 17, and the tongues 14 and 15, and cannot become accidentally removed from the paper fastener. To withdraw the fastener from the sheets, the tongues 14 and 15 must first he sprung from their locations beneath the paper as disclosed in Fig. 4, and the paper must afterwards be folded back from its position of Fig. 3 to its position of Fig. 2. It is apparent that the tongues 14 and 15 preclude the possibility of folding of the paper from the position'of Fig. 3 to that of Fig. 2when said tongues 14 and 15 are situated as in Fig. 4.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 6 to 10, the fastener there shown consists of a flat blank 10 including a pair of portions 11 and 12 connected by a neck 13. The portion 11 includes tongues 14 and 15 which are parallel with each other and are at right-angles to the portion 11, and are spaced preferably at equal distances from opposite sides of the neck 13. The portion 12 includes tongues 16 and 17 which are parallel with each other and with the tongues 14 and 15 and extend inwardly of the blank, the tongue 16 being between the tongue 14 and the neck 13, and the tongue 17 being between the tongue 15 and the neck 13. The blank 10 is also rectangular or squarein general outline. The inner edges 18 and 19 are situated adjacent the inner edge of the portion 11 and are desirably flat.

The fastener of Figs. 6 to 10 is more especially adapted for use at a side edge of papers or the like to be fastened together, although it could readily be used at the corner of papers or the like.

The manner of application of the fastener of Figs. 6 to 10 to a side edge of papers to be secured together will be apparent from Figs. 7, 8, and 9. As disclosed in Fig. 7, A represents a plurality of sheets of paper a side edge of each of which has been inserted above the port-ion 11, its tongues 14 and 15 and the neck 13, and beneath the tongues 16 and 17 of the portion 12' of the fastener, the inner edges 20 and 21 of the slots between the neck 18 and the tongues 16 and 17 causing the edges B of the sheets to terminate at the bases 22 and 23, respectively, of the tongues 16 and 17. At this time the outer end portions of the tongues 14 and 15 and the Whole of the portion 12 are without the confines of the sheets of paper.

In Fig. 8 the sheets of paper are shown as having been folded along the line D which is parallel with the side edge B and is defined by the flat edges 18 and 19 of the tongues 16 and 17. In said Fig. 8, no partof the blank 10 is below the sheets of paper, the tongues 16 and 17 being inserted be tween the uppermost sheet and the part E thereof.

In Fig. 9 the tongues 14 and 15 are shown as having been sprung about the side edges B of the sheets of paper, so that the portion 11 is at a side of the sheets adjacent the line of fold D, the neck 13' and the portion 12 are upon the upper side of the sheets, the tongues 16 and 17 are inserted between the uppermost sheet and the folded over part E thereof, and the tongues 14 and 15 are upon the lower side of the sheets. The sheets are locked between the neck 13, the tongues 1.6 and 17, and the tongues 14 and 15. The fastener is withdrawn from the sheets in the manner described in connection with Figs. 2 to 4.

In Fig. 5, I have disclosed the paper fastener of Fig. 1 applied to a side edge of sheets of paper, and Fig. 10 the fastener of Fig. 6 is shown applied to the corner of sheets. The manner of application is apparent from the description already given.

The opening 24 in the portion 1.1 and the opening 24 in the portion 11 is for the purpose of filing or suspending papers or the like secured by my novel fastener.

It will be evident that various embodiments of the invention will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art of making paper fasteners without departing from the principle of the present invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A paper fastener comprising a plurality of portions and a neck connecting said portions, one of said portions having tongues at opposite sides of said neck and spaced therefrom, and the other of said portio'ns having tongues adjacent said neck and between said neck and the tongues first mentioned.

2. A paper fastener comprising a flat blank including a pair of bodies and a neck connecting said bodies, one of said bodies having tongues at opposite sides of and spaced from said neck, and the other body having tongues at opposite sides of said neck and between said neck and the tongues 10 first mentioned. o
