Description

Patented June 15, 1926.
UNITED STATES ELI BEAUDIN, OF LAONA, WISCONSIN,
noontoox.
Application filed June 4, 1925. seriai No. 34.908.
This invention aims to provide a simple device, adapted to be carried in the pocket, and so constructed that it may be used to lock or hold closed, a door or other barrl er, in a way which will be pointed out hereinafter.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which willappear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, mounted in place for use; Figure 2 is an elevation of the device per se; Figure 3 is an end elevation.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a clamp including a screw or bolt 1 having a head 2 provided witha turning button 3. A nut 4 is threaded on the screw 1. An anchor plate 5 is mounted pivotally, intermediate its ends, on the screw 1, and is located between the nut 4 and the head 2 of the screw. The anchor 5 has a lateral flange 6 provided with teeth 7. The numeral 8 marks a brace plate provided intermediate its ends with an elongated slot 9 receiving the screw 1, the construction being such that the brace plate can be moved both pivotally and longitudinally on the screw. The brace plate 8 has a lateral foot 10 at one end, and a lateral finger piece 11 at the other. Intermediate its ends, the brace plate is supplied upon one edge with a transverse flange 12. The brace plate 8 is located between the anchor plate 5 and the nut 4, in engagement with the'nut. The numeral 14 designates a spacer mounted to swing on the screw 1 between the brace plate 8 and the anchor plate 5. At 15 there is shown'a retainer, in the form of a plate, having an elongated slot 16 receiving the screw 1, the construction being such that the retainer can move both endwise and pivotally on the screw. The retainer 15 is located between the anchor plate 5 and the head 2 of the screw. The retainer 15 has a lateral foot 17 at one end, and a finger piece 18 at the other. Any of the plates, for instance, the members 5 and 14, may be equipped at their outer ends with openings 19, so that the article may be carried on a key ring, or be hung up on a nail, when not in use. The function of the flange 12 on the brace plate 8 is to hold the nut 4 against rotation when the screw 1 is turned by means of the button 3.
The numeral 20 marks a door or other closure, the jamb appearing at 21, and the casing at 22. The mortise for the lock bolt is shown at 23, and the striking plate at 24. The flange 6 of the anchor plate 5 is engaged in the opening of the striking plate 24, the brace plate 8 is moved pivotally and endwise until its foot 10 engages the door 20, and the retainer 15 is moved pivotally and endwise until its foot 17 engages the casing 22, the spacer 24 being located between the parts 8 and 5, the elements 8, 14, 5 and 15 being alined. The screw 1 is advanced into the nut 4 to bind the parts together, and the door 20, clearly, cannot be opened. The foot 17 aids in preventing the entire device from shifting endwise toward the door 20 and the casing 22 in Figure 1. If the crack between the edge of the door 20 and the jamb 21 is not so wide as shown in Figure 1, the spacer 14 can be turned to a position at right angles to the parts 5 and 8, it being possible to bring the ends of those parts which are adjacent to the door, together, transversely, because the said parts have some resiliency.
It is not necessary that the device he used in connection with the striking plate 24. If the striking plate is not available, the sharpened and toothed flange 6 of the anchor plate 5 simply is driven into the jamb 21 at any convenient place.
I claim In a device of the class described, a bolt having a head and a nut threaded on the bolt; a retainer, an anchor, and a brace, mounted on the bolt between the head and the nut, the brace having an elongated slot whereby it may be shifted endwise on the bolt, the anchor and the retainer being provided at their inner ends with lateral parts which extend in the same direction, the brace having a lateral door-engaging foot which projects in an opposite direction, and an out standing flange on the brace and engaging the nut to hold the nut against rotation, the flange being; of substantially the same length as the slot, so that the flange will remain in engagement- With the nut When the brace is shifted endwise as aforesaid, and being long enough, compared With the total length of the brace, so as to have an appreciable reinforcingefi ect 011 the brace, thereby stiffening the brace and enabling it to Withstand the thrust which occurs when an effort is made to open the door.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature.
ELI BEAUDIN.
