Description
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
GEPHAS A. BUTTLES, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCOFSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOU NTAIN-SPRINKLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,903, dated January 19, 1875; application filed y August 1, 18,74.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OEPHAS A. BUTTLEs, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in 4Fountain Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to sprinkle grass-plats and other places Where sprinkling is needed; and is a stand with revolving arms, with holes perforated in their sides, through which the water spurts out in streams, and upright arms revolving, also with perforations, through which the water spurts, with a perforated head, through which the Water is thrown out in streams, and a valve which closes the orifice to the head through which the water flows whenever it is necessary.
Figure l is a perspective view ot' the fountain, Fig. 2, a sectional view ot' same; Fig. a view of the valve.
A is the base of the fountain 5 B, the opening on which to screw a pipe to convey water into the fountain; C, the center pipe, through which the water is conveyed to the revolving arms; D, perforated arms in the revolving hub, which can be turned in the hub so as to bring the perforations upor down, so as to give more or less motion to the arms. These arms are made curving, so that the streams of Water passing out th rough the perforations may cross each other and-make a graceful appearance; E, opening in the pipe C inside of the revolving hub, through which the water flows, and lling the hub; F, revolving hub; G, arms coming out of the top of the revolving hub, with perforations in the top sides and ends for the water to liow through; N, head of the hub, with perforations in its sides and top; H, perforations round the top of the revolving head, I, perforations in the top of the head, K, valve, which closes the valveopening whenever it is necessary to stop the water from owing through the head; L, valve-seat; M, perforations in the top of hub F for the Water to stream through.
This fountain is operated as follows: Attach a pipe to opening B and the water will How through it into the pipe C, and passing up and through arms D and G and perforations I, H, and M and, as the water passes ont through the perforations in arm D, it will revolve them, and the water, by the bend in the arms, will cross in streams, making a tine appearance; and the water passing out through the perforations in the top of the hub, and the arms G and head of the hub, will form a canopy above the fountain of a very line appearance; and Whenever it is necessary to prevent the Water from flowing through lthe head, put in the valve K by unserewing the head, and screwing it down again, it will rest on the valve and stop the now of waterinto the head, and it will llow out through the arms only.
I claim as my invention- A revolving fountain with arms I) and G, and hub F, and valve K, substantially as specified.
