The present invention is directed to improvements in caps for radiators of automobiles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that the usual bars of the cap will be positioned at all times in parallel relation with respect to the vertical plane of the radiator so as to not detract from the ornamental appearance thereof when in place upon the radiator.
It is a well known fact that the gaskets used in connection with radiator caps lose their inherent resiliency, not only from natural deterioration, but from pressure to which they are subjected when the cap is secured tightly upon the filling neck of the radiator. This is extremely objectionable, since as the gasket is compressed the thickness thereof is reduced, thus permitting the cap to be screwed downwardly upon the neck to such an extent that the bars thereof will not lie in parallel relation with the vertical plane of the radiator, which being the case the ornamental and symmetrical cfi'ect desired is lost and it 1s toovercome this objection that the present invention has been perfected.
lVith these and other objects in view, as
will appear as the description proceeds, the invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing 1 designates the usual exteriorly threaded filling neck and upon which the cap 2 is threaded through the medium of the threads 3, which not only serve their function for securing the cap upon the neck, but also serve to retain the disk 4 therein. As will be observed the disk 'has its periphery provided with threads 5 for engagement with the threads 3, whereby said disk may be adjusted as the gasket 6 becomes compressed. In order to adjust the disk the under surface thereof is provid d with a pair of sockets 7 for engage ment with a conventional form of spanner wrench.
in number, but it will be apparent that the number may be increased if desired. However,'it has been found from actual experience that twelve of such grooves are ample to co-operate with the set screw 9 to obtain and hold the disk properly adjusted.
The bars 13 of the cap are as customary cast integral therewith at diametrically opposite points and, may be of any desired form and ornamented to suit the francy of the manufacturer.
. The disk 4; is initially threaded in the cap 2 to its greatest extent and with the upper end of the set screw 9 engaged in one of the grooves 12, said screw obviously preventing accidental rotation of the disk.
The top 11 and the disk A} are provided, respectively, with openings 14; and 15 to permit the attachment of a motor meter stem (not shown) to the cap.
As customary the gasket 6 is engaged upon the filling neck 1 and when the cap is screwed thereon the disk rests upon the gasket. As this gasket decreases in thickness the cap can he obviously screwed downwardly upon the neck to a greater extent, which being the case the bars 13 will be permitted to assume positions out of parallelism with the vertical plane of the radiator, thus detracting from the neat appearance of the cap. When this defect becomes noticeable the set screw 9 is adjusted to permit the disk 4 to be screwed downwardly a distance to compensate for the decreased thickness of the gasket 6, whereupon the set screw is engagedin a selected groove 12 so that when the cap 'is securely engaged upon the filling neck the bars 18 will lie in a position that does not detract from the neat appearance of the device.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with a radiator cap, of a disk threaded in the cap for vertical adjustment with respect thereto, said cap having a plurality of grooves formed interiorly thereof, and means carried by the disk for selectively engaging the grooves gagement therewith, a disk threaded in the cap for vertical adjustment, a gasket disposed between the neck and disk, saidoap having a plurality ofradial grooves formed 10 in its top, a set screw carried by; the disk for selectively engaging the grooves to hold the disk in adjusted positions with respect to the gasket, as and for the purpose set forth.
