PATENT OFFICE IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification formirg part of' Letters Patent No. 158,839, dated. January 19 1875; application filed October a, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FERDINAND GUIOHE- TEAU and ALEXANDRE PERIN, of the city and State of New York, have invented a Permanent Self-Binder, of which the following is a specification:
The object of our invention is to supply a case for keeping, in book-form, weekly papers and other papers to be preserved, letters, family papers, legal docnments, archives, &c., to avoid the inconvenience of folding or rollin g them, and give thefacility of placing them with order on the shelves of a library.
The case is shown open in Figure 1. It is composed of three principal parts joined together by different kinds of hinges, as represented at m. It can be made of light wood or other firm material. g is a border, forming the edge of the case, and giving to the same, when properly colored or papered, the exact appearance of a book, asrepresented in Figs. 3 and 4. a
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the back of the case, in which I) I) represent a metallic rod or band, destined to hold the papers firinly against the back of the case. (I is an axis,
to which the rods or hands are fixed, and on which they are movable, for the purpose of taking the papers in or out. The other end of the rods or hands rests in the slots 0 of the metallic plate 1. At 1; i the rod is bent, or the band punched, so as to have more elasticity.
This construction answers also two other purposes: First, it serves to hold the leaves tightly together, so as to make them appear, when open, as if firmly bound second, it renders it easier to take the leaves in and out. The part a of the clasp has a flange, under which the edge 9 is engaged when the case is closed, which arrangement serves to keep the case firmly locked. The binder, however, can be used Without clasp as Well.
It will be observed-that, beside the quality of elasticity .that the folds t' 'i impart to the rods, they furnish convenient means for handling the latter as well as effective devices for clamping the sheets together without cutting them.
The rod 1), having the elastic folds i 6, substantially as shown and described.
