UNITED STATES PATENT I OFF-ICE.
GROSVENOR r. ROBINSON, or SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR QT O HE anrrnnson GLASS COMPANY, or FoLLaNsBE wns'r VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION or WEST VIRGINIA.
LIGHTING FIXTURE.
My invention relates to electric light fixtures, and particularly to means for covering' the lamp socket and supporting the globes or shades made use of in such fixtures, and its object is to provide a screwless holder in which the globe is supported directly by the socket cover, and means for preventing accidental separation or undue movement of the parts after the fixture is hung, being a modification of the invention shown in my copending application Serial No. 641,803, filed May 28, 1923.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a lighting fixture embodying my invention, the lamp socket being shown in elevation, and the globe and lamp broken away.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the socket cover removed, and
Fig. 3 is a top view of the outer shell removed.
Similar reference characters denote like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing 10 indicates a globe or shade; 11 the incandescent lamp,
and 12 the lamp socket, all being of the usual character, the lamp socket being provided with the customary threaded stud 13, at its top.
14 indicates the socket cover, there being an opening 15 in its top of a size to permit the threaded portion of the stud 13 on the lamp socket to pass therethrough, while that portion of the cover surrounding such opening 15, rests upon the top of the shoulder 16 of the stud 13. The shell 14 entirely covers the socket 12, its lower part extending below the socket in the form of two oppositely disposed arms or wings 17 somewhat fan-shaped, curved outwardly and slightly bowed to conform to the interior surface of the globe 10, into which they are inserted when the fixture is assembled. This shell or socket cover 14 with its integral depending arms or wings 17, is preferably cut out of one piece of flat metal and stamped up to shape.
The arms or wings 17 are readily placed into the mouth of the globe 10 by first inserting one of them with the socket cover 14 tipped to one side and then lowered within the globe a suflicient distance to-permit the wing on the opposite side to enter the bowl, after-which the socket cover is turned into a vertical position and drawn up- Application filed August 11, 1925. Serial No. 49,516
wardly until both wings contact with the inner surface of .the globe, one on each side thereof. The wings possess sufficient resiliency to prevent too rigid pressure against the glassware.
18 indicates an outer shell surrounding the socket cover 14, and provided in its top with an opening 19, of'a size corresponding with the opening 15,, in the top of the socket cover, and for the same purpose.
This outer shell 18 is provided with an enlarged bottom or skirt 20, which fits over the mouth of the globe 10 and seats upon its outer surface adjacent thereto, while at its top the shell 18 rests upon the top of the socket cover 14. w
21 denotes a nut provided with an integral loop 22 at its upper end for connection with a suspending cord or chain 23. This nut 21 is threaded on its outer surface.
After the socket cover 14 has been connected with the interior of the globe in the manner hereinbefore described, and the outer shell 18' placed in position for use, the nut 21 is screwed down upon the stud 13 of the socket cover. A- clamping nut 24 is then. screwed down over the threaded outer surface of the nut 21 into contact with the vtop'of the outer shell 18, thus holding the forms two functions, that of a socket cover,
and globe support, while the outer shell 18, together with the nuts 21 and 24 securely hold the shell. 14 and globe 10 in their connected positions.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a lamp socket having a threaded stud, ashell covering said socket and hav ing a central opening in its top for the passage of said threaded stud, the lower portion of said shell being downwardly extended on two opposite sides in the form of outwardly curved wings, an outer shell covering said inner shell, also provided with an opening in its top for the passage of the socket stud, said outer shell having an enlarged bottom, a nut screwed upon the socket stud, said nut being threaded on its exterior, and a clamping nut fitted thereon.
2. In a lighting fixture and in combination, a globe or'shede, a lamp socket provided with a threaded stud, a socket cover formed from a single piece of metal having an opening in its top for the passage of the threaded stud on the lamp socket, the lower portion of szud cover being downwardly extended on two opposite sides in the {01111 of outwardly curved wings-hearing against the lnner surtace oi the globe, an outer shell surrounding said cover also provlded with GROSVENOR P. ROBINSON.
