a {My invention relates to a polishing im-' plement and more particularly to an implement employing a strip of polis'hingmaterial in'which the parts are so arranged that 5 the strip is placed under tension when in use. The implement is specially adapted for manicuring purposes, although I do not intend to limit its usethereto, as I apprehend it"may be equally useful for" other purposes. I

One of the objects of'my invention is the provision of a polishing implement soconstructed that the strip of polishing material may be conveniently and quickly placed in position on the implement without the necessity of providing any loops or pockets on the ends ofthe' strip, thereby keeping the, cost of making the strips down to a minimum and providing relatively inexpen- "sive arrangement whereby a fresh, clean strip of polishing material may be used for each manicuring or other operation, if desired. I i H A further object of my invention is the provision of an ii'nplement'of such construc tion that the strip of polishing material may be conveniently and quickly placed under the desired tension by the person using the instrument; and, to this end, the invention preferably contemplates a holder provided at one end with an upwardly extenda ing grip portion, means to fasten one end of the strip of polishing material tothe end of the holder having said grip portion, and a grip member adjustably mounted on the other end of the holderin combination with means for securing the other end of the polishing strip, the parts being so arranged that when the grip member is moved toward the'grip portion, the strip is placed under the desired tension. It will be noted that the length of the device isapproximately equal to .the width of ones hand. The polishing means 11 preferably comprises the strips 22 and23,the strip 22 being made of some soft pliant polishing material, like ch amois, while the strip 23 is made of some strong, pliant relatively nonstretchable material, for example, cotton or linen cloth, the two strips being united preferably by a cementitious substance. -1 have found that the strips may be inexpensively constructed by using a strip of. tape having on one side a coating of adhesive substance and pressing the strip. firmly against the strip of chamois. In practice, I prefer to take a relatively large piece of chamois and ,a piece of strong, pliant non-stretchable fabric material of similar size having on one side a coating of adhesive substance and I unite the two pieces by, pressing or iron ing them with a hot iron. The adhesive substance unites the non-stretchable fabric maierialfirmly' tothe chamois, and the pieces desired;

The strip 22 is preferably impregnated with a suitable abrasive substance, for example, crocus powder or rouge. The abrasive substance may be, applied to the polish ing side of the strip 22 in the form of a powder, but I prefer to dissolve the powder in for the polishing means to injure the cuticle adjacent the nail, to burn or warp the nail or to cause pain is effectively obviated.

I The strips are readily removed and placed in position on the holder and, as they are relatively inexpensive, a fresh, unsoiled strip maybe used as often as desired. The implement is particularly adapted to meet the needs of the professional manicurist, espe cially in those localities where strict laws re plement isprohibited. With an implement embodying my invention a fresh, unsoiled strip of the polishing material may be used] by the manicurist for each person.
