E. H SHEFFIELD JAW BRACING AND SETTING APPLIANCE Filed August 28, 1925 Patented June 8, 1926.
, A 1,ss1,5ss- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELISE H. SHEFFIELD, OF HARTFORD, KENTUCKY.
JAW BRAGING AND SETTING AFPLIANCE.
Application filed August as, 1925. Serial No. 53,109.
The present invention relates to a jaW setting and bracing appliance which isparticularly designed for use by physicians, dentists, undertakers, and the like.
An important object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this nature including a head gear, a chin engaging element, and resilient and adjustable connecting members between the pin engaging element and the head gear.
. Another very important object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this nature which 1s adjustable to be applicable to the head of practically all human beings.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an appliance ofthis nature which is easy to assemble, or disassemble, one which possesses an exceedingly simple construction so that it may be manu factured at a relatively low cost.
A still further im ortant object of the invention is to provi e an appliance of this nature which is strong, durable, reliable and efficient in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, andin the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed,
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view showing the appliance as used, i gigure 2 is an elevation of the appliance, an
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of, a plate used in the appliance.
Referring to the drawin in detail, it
will be seen that the app 'ance: includes generally a head: gear A, connecting members B, and chin engaging element "C.
Referring now specifically to the head gear .A it will be seen that numerals 5 and 6 designate a pair of bowed strips, preferably of metal covered with leather orthe like, as indicated at- 7. The numerals 8 denote plates, apertured as at 9 to receive rivets 10 or other pivot elements which pass through the extremitiesofthe bowed stri s 5 and 6.- Thus the strips 5 and 6- maybe swung toward or away from each 'other so as to fit the different size and shape heads. The ends of the plates 6 are bent rectanslotted as at 13.
Referring now particularly to the chin engaging element C, it will be seen. that the same includes a strap or sheet of flexible material 14 having a centrally and longitudinally extending slot or opening 14 provided therein, through which is adapted to extend the apex of the chain. Ears 16 formed of metal or the like are riveted or otherwise fastened as at 17 to the extremities of the strap or sheet 14 and are provided with apertures 18.
The connecting members B each include a bar 19, and a spring 20.. Each bar 19 is provided with a plurality of apertures 21, and an aperture 22. The bars 19 are adapted to be inserted through the slot 13 of the extension 12, and the apertures 21 are adapted to receive lugs 23 projecting from intermediate portions of the plate 8. The springs 20 are formed with terminal eyes 24 and 25, the former of which are engageable with the openings 18 and the latter with the apertures 22.
The application and utility of the appliance seems to be quite selfevident from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawing. It will be seen that the plurality of apertures 21 allow sufiicient adjustment to ac commodate the appliance to different size heads, and the adjustment of the bowed members 5 and Sin relation to each other allow the device to be fitted 'on heads of different shapes.
Otherwise it is thought thatthe construc- 'tion, operation, utility, and advantages of the invention will be clearly understood without a more detailed description.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed by way of example, since in actual practice itattains the featuresof advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will be apparent that changes in the'details of construction, and
in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing .any of'its advantages;
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A l-appliance of the classdescribed including a pair of bowed. members having their extremities pivoted together, a pair of plates pivoted to the pivoted extremities of the bowed members, lugs projecting from the plates, extensions projecting from the plates and provided with slots, apertured bars extending throughthe slots and engageable with the lugs, springs on the bars, and a chin engaging element attached to the springs.
2. An appliance of the class described in cluding a pair of bowed members having their extremities pivoted together, a pair of plates pivoted to the pivoted extremities of the bowed members, lugs projecting from the plates, extensions pro ecting from the plates and provided with slots, apertured bars extending through the slots and engageablewith the lugs, springs on the bars,
a chin engaging element attached to the springs, said element being formed of fiexible material and having a slot therein through which the apex of the chin is adapted to extend. 1
3. In appliance of the class described, including, in combination, a head gear, a pair of plates pivoted to the head gear, lugs projecting from the plates, extensions projecting from the plates and provided withslots, apertured bars extending through the slots and engageable with the lugs, springs engaged with the bars, and a chin engaging element attached to the springs.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
. ELISE H. SHEFFIELD.
