BELT LIFE GUARD.
Application filed February This invention relates to life preserving apparatus and particularly to an improved belt life-guard or preserver and has for an object the provision of a construction wherein the device may be quickly and easily applied to a window frame and quickly and easily removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a life-guard adapted particularly for guarding persons cleaning the outside of windows, the structure being such that free movement of the person may be had while a bracing and protecting member holds the person against falling.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevatior of part of a window showing a life-guard mounted there on, disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2- is a top plan View on an enlarged scale of the guard shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section showing one of the supporting brackets and the way the other members are connected thereto.
Figure 41 is a fragmentary top plan View of one end of a modified form of belt and associated parts to that shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a building of any desired kind having a window frame 2 in which there are provided upper and lower sashes 3 and 4. hen it is desired to wash the glass in these sashes exteriorly, the lifeguard 5 is mounted as shown in Figure 1 and then the person may readily sit on the sill 6 with the back against the guard and in this position have ready access to the outside of the window. The guard 5 is provided with a belt or strap 7 of flexible material, as for instance, leather, though metal might be used if preferred. The strap 7, which may be leather, rubber, metal or other material, is bent back upon itself at each end so as to present loops 8 and 9 which accommodate the pintle sections 10 and 11 of the links 12 and 13. Each of the links 12 and 13 is provided with arms 14 and 15 and each of said arms is provided with an eye 16 at their inner ends, each of said eyes firmly clamping a tubular member 17, which tubular members are flared at the top and bottom as shown particularly in Figure 3.
27, 1925. Serial No. 12 ,139.
The respective tubular members for the links are slidingly fitted over the upstanding pintle section 18 of the respective brackets 19, which brackets are preferably provided with a threaded end 20 whereby they may be readily screwed into the window frame.
hen leaning back against the strap 7, the same will conform somewhat to the shape of the body and also by having the loops 8 and 9 arranged as shown in Figure 2 a pivotal action may be secured to accommodate the pressure as the same shifts with the movement of the body during the washing of the window. here the strap 7 is of leather or other comparatively soft material, wearing loops or bands 21 and 22 are arranged in loops 8 and 9 to take care of the friction, said wearing loops 8 and 9 being made of metal or other desired material and held in place by the same rivets which hold the loops 8 and 9 in place. After the tubular member 17 of each of the arms 12 and 13 is arranged in position as shown in Figure 1, a cotter pin or other suitable member is inserted into a suitable aperture in the pintle 18 for locking the parts against accidental removal.
Figure 4 shows a slightly modified construction of belt 7 which is not wrapped around part of the arm 18 but is riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to a U-shaped strap 22 which acts in a similar capacity as the loop 9 of Figure 2. This form is very desirable where the strap 7 is comparatively thick and is liable to break when bent.
What I claim is:
1. A safety life-guard for use in cleaning the outside of windows, comprising a flexible belt structure having looped ends, a pair of arms, each; of said arms having a vertical section positioned so as to extend through the respective looped ends of the belt, each of said arms being provided with a pair of bars extending substantially at right angles to said vertical section, each of said bars being formed with an eyelet at the outer end, a tubular member for each of said arms carried in said eyelets, and a bracket for each of said arms, each of said brackets having a vertical pintle section extending through one of said tubular members.
2. In a device of the character described, a flexible central member, a pair of arms hingedly connected therewith, each of said arms having a pair of eyelets at the free end, a tubular member for each pair of eye lets, each of said tubular members having flared ends for preventing the eyelets from slipping oil of the tubular members, and means includinga vertical pintle for supporting each of said arms, said vertical pintles extending through said tubular members, and means engaging the pintles for m preventing the accidental removal of the tubular members therefrom.
