Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEETCE.
MARMADIIKE H. MENDENHALL, OF WABASH, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFLECTORS AND SIGHT-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,726, dated January 12, 1875; application filed August 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M. H. MENDENHALL, of the city and county of Wabash and State ot' Indiana, have in vented a new and Improved Reflector and Eye-Sight Protector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part ot' this specication, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
The object of the invention is to provide au improved device for use in reading by the aid of artificial light. The same consists in a lamp-containing box or case cut away at one side, and provided with a pivoted or hinged plate for deiiecting the light, the same being adjustable, and adapted to be clamped or secured at various angles,4 as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, the rectangular and nearly square case or box A has a chimney-tube, a, at the top, and a side door, c, through which to introduce or remove the lamp a. The upper portion of the side opposite the door c is formed of xed part 7c, a pendent plate, l, hinged thereto, and a large mirror-surfaced dei'lector, g, which is centrally pivoted, by means of screws h, in notches or open slots i. Said screws also serve to clamp the reflector when adjusted at the desired angle. The lower lefthand corner of the box A is out away, as shown, to allow the light to be reiiected downwardout'of the case at an angle of about forty-five degrees on the page of reading matter at e.
. By adjusting the pivoted reflector g at the desired angle, the light emitted by the lamp may be concentrated or diused as conditions require, and the eyes thus protected from injurious effects of both light and heat.
When it is desired to allow the escape of a greater quantity of light, the mirror g is pivoted in the upper notches i, the hinged piece Z permitting such adjustment to be made without difficulty.
A reflector, b, may be attached to door o, opposite the lamp or lamp-burner.
I do not claim the use ot' a pivoted reflector in combination with a light-emitting medium; but
I claim- 1. The box A, open or cut away at one side, and the deector g, pivoted in notches thereot' and adapted to be clamped in any adjustment by means ot' screws h, said parts being combined as shown and described.
2. The box A, provided with two sets ot' notches, z' and t', and the hinged piece l, and the delector g, combined as shown and described.
Given under my hand at theci ty of Wabash, Wabash county, and State ot'Indiana, this 29th day of July, 1874.
MARMADUKE H. MENDENHALIJ.
