IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING CIGARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 158,714, dated January 12, 1875; application filed December 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGMUND J ACOBY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful I'm'provement in Putting up Cigars, of which the foL lowing is a specification This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents a plan or top View of a box of cigars put up according to my invention.
This invention consists in a package of cigars in which the tips of the cigars point alternately in opposite directions, so that the tip of each cigar is situated over and between the buttends of the adjacent cigars and by tnese means the tips recede from the line of the butts, and the cigars can be packed tight, and, at the same time, a uniform evaporation of the moisture in all the parts of each cigar is effected, and the cigars are not liable to dry out at their tips, while their butt-ends remain moist.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a cigar-box, which may be made of wood or of any other suitable material, in the form usually employed for such articles. This box is filled with a number of cigars, B, and these ci gars are so placed that their tips alternately point in opposite directions.
Usually cigars, on being packed in a box, are so placed that the tips of the entire lot pointin one and the same direction, and, if the cigars are pressed down tight, their buttends lie in close contactwith each other, while their tips areout of contact, and, consequently, the tips dry out much quicker than the butt-ends and if the cigars are dry and ready for use. the tips are much too dry, while the butt-ends still contain more or less moisture. In cutting these over-dried tips great care must be taken not to split the cigar; and, furthermore, that portion of a cigar which has become too dry does not taste well on being smoked.
By arranging the cigars with their tips pointing alternately in opposite directions, I gain the great advantage that the butt-ends of the cigars will dry just as fast as the tips and the cigars packed according to my invention are fit to be smoked in less time than they are if packed according to the old style, and the taste of a cigar taken from one of my packages is uniform throughout.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A package of cigars having the cigars arranged so that theirtips alternately point in opposite directions, and recede from the line of the butts, in the manner and for the object herein specified.
