LAST.
Application fiia ivia 8,1925. seal no. 33352.
My invention relates to lasts, and particularly to collapsing lasts. It is the object of my invention to provide a collapsing last with the parts pivotal- 1y mounted one on the a given center of movement with, such parts coifznected'together by a solid link, the ends ,1 of whichare adapted to yield or open to permit the movement of the last parts from is one positionto the other and to hold them ina given position when so moved;
1t my object to provide a flatspring ,platelhaving such yielding endsas to permit of the movement of the last parts and to yieldinglv resist such movement.
it is a turther object to provide a straight plate lin the endsv of which permit of this yielding 'eatnre thus eliminating a spring. It is a 'iurther object to mount thisplate with the springends on anchorpins so arranged that a line drawn between the centers thereof will pass over the center of move ment of the last parts'when the parts are moved. and the ends of the links are flexed. ie'lerring to the drawings: Figure 1 indicates a preferred form of the last partially in section;
Figure 2 illustrates a modified form; and Figure 3 illustrates another modification.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 a toe part having a slot 2 for accommodating the link. The rear face of the toe part is designated 3. Located transversely of the rear face f opening of the slot 2 is a semi-circular groove 4. for receiving the projecting cylindrical shoulder or knuckle 5 carried by the heel part 6, on the forward face of this heel part which is vertical at 7 to form a shoulder.
abutting against the shoulder 8 of the toe part, but this face is cut away at 9 to per} mit ot' the collapsing of the last parts. The heel part is provided'with a slot 10 for re ceiving the link which consists of a flat plate having a central portion 11 and end portions which are mounted upon the anchor pins 12and 13 extended transversely of the slots 10 and 2. These anchor pins are so located that a line drawn between the centers thereof will be below the center of movement 14 when the parts are in expanded position and above such point when the parts are in collapse position. The ends oi the link are provided with Yshaped slots'15, the base of the Y-shaped portions being diother moving about I the last part 1 and across the rected towards the center o'fthe link which s solid, while the arms are spaced from and are located on either side of the respective anchor pins 12 and 13, there, being suilicient solid material between the arms to'torm the bearing in the end of the link for the anchor pins: The material on either side of the Y-shaped. arms is connected together, by an end portion' of the link material on the out:
side'ot the anchor pins designated 16 which i 1 torn'is a yielding bridgeacross the Y-shaped opening and a reinforcing abutment for the I rear surfaces of the anchor pins.
. It is obvious from an inspection of the drawingsthat when .theparts move these ends of the links flex because of outward pressure of the anchor pins 12 and 1?) against these slotted, spring-like ends s'ufiiciently to permit of the movement overthe dead center 14 so-called. i 4
The link form shown in Figure 2 consi's ts of a central portion 11 withenlarged heads 17 which have transverse, partially curved slots 18 which communicate with a right" angle, longitudinally located narrower slot 19 having a circular openi1ig20 at the other s end ofthe slot 19; from the slot -18. The slot 18 is widened at the "center thereof to accommodate the anchor pins 12 or 13. The bridge member end of the link 21 is convex to form a resisting spring bridge member.
WVhen the parts pass" over dead center the line or distance between the centers of the anchor pins being lengthened by reason of the movement of the parts on the eccentrically curved co=operating faces 4 and 5 the end member's 21.,are flexed, which flexing causes the slots 19 to spring open. This yielding of the ends ofthe link permits of the movementof the parts from one position to the other.
Referring to Figure 3, there will be observed another'form of link which consists of a plate link having a solid central portion 22 with enlarged heads 23 which are provided with a centrally located slit 24 which extends inwardly to the base of a V-shapedslot 25 in which is located the anchor pin. ,Whengthe parts move over dead center this slit 2i opens by reason of the pressure of the pins 12 and 13 against each side of the ends 23, as will be apparent from an inspection of the drawing, and
either side of the ends 23 is spread apart or flexed yieldingly.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications and changes as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a last having a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock upon one another about a given point, a link having an inflexible body connecting said parts together, said link having spring ends adapted to flex to permit the parts to move from one position to the other.
2. In a last having a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock upon one another about a given point, a link connecting said parts together, said link having spring ends adapted to flex to permit the parts to move from one position to the other, the center of said link being inflexible.
3. In a last having a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock upon one another abouta given point, a link connecting said parts together, said link having spring ends adapted to flex to permit the parts to move from one position to the other, the center of said link being inflexible, said link consisting of a plate.
4%. In a last having a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock upon one another about a given point, a link connecting said parts together, said link having spring ends adapted to flex to permit the parts to move from one position to the other, the center of said link being inflexible, said link consisting of a plate, said plate having slots at either end thereof to permit of the flexing of the ends of the link. 7
5. In a last, a heel part and a toe part adapted to rock about one another about a given center of movement, a plate link of substantially rectangular form, anchor pins for the ends of said link, the ends of said link being arranged to yield and flex when the parts are moved from one position to the other.
6. In alast, a heel part and a toe part adapted to rock about one another about a given center of movement, a plate link of substantially rectangular form, anchor pins for the ends of said link, the ends of said link being arranged to yield and flex when the parts are moved from one position to the other, said flexing being permitted by slots cut in the ends of said link.
7. Ina last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock one upon the other, a plate link connecting said last parts, anchor pins in said last parts for supporting the ends of said link, said link being provided at either end with a Y-shaped slot to permit the link to flex at its ends.
.8. In a last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock one on the other, anchor pins in said last parts adapted to support a plate link, a plate link having Y-shaped slots in the ends thereof to permit the ends of the link to flex, said anchor pins being located in the jaws of the Y-shaped slots.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature.
