ARTHUR EHRLINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOI-t TO F.-
PATENT orricsj KLINGER'& LANGBEIN CO.,,OI" PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORA TION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
POCKET oonsrnuo'rronren LEATHER GOODS.
Application filed December 31, E325. Serial No. 78,541.
My invention relates to a novel pocket construction for leather goods such as pocket books, wallets, card cases, cigarette cases and the like, wherein the outer wall of the )oc'ket instead of bein stitched flat a ainst the bod of the oods as has heretofore generally been done, is, prior to its assembly wit-h the pocket book body by being stitched or otherwise secured thereto, preformed by being pressed or shaped between suitable moulds, so that a well defined outer front wall 1s provided from WlllCll pro]ect 1nwhich terminate in an integral foot orfiange 7 extending around the ends and bottom of the pocket, or front pocket wall so that when said flange is stitched to the body of the pocket book or the like, a well defined and capacious pocket is produced, into which the articles to be carried can be readily in-.
sorted, the pocket front wall thus being initially pro-formed and having the same opening or area throughout its'widt-h and depth, whereby cards, bills, currency, cigarettes and the like can be readily inserted into the pocket and withdrawn therefrom.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel pocket construction for leather goods and the like wherein there is formed upon the body of the article, a well defined pocket open through its length and width and of substantially the same area in cross,
section at its top, bottom and ends, and throughout its longitudinal and transverse median lines.
To the above ends my invention consists of a novel pocket construction, hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims appended thereto.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings several forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1, represents a perspective view of one style of a pocket book, embodying my invention.
Figure 2, represents a partial section on line Q .Z,Figure 1 v V Figure}, represents a perspective view showing the PITG-IEOIlilGtl' or moulded outer wall of the pocket prior to its being stitched in place, as seen in Figure 1. a
Figure 4, represents another style of pocket bOOlQlIttVlllg my invention applied thereto. 1
Figure '5, represents a cigarette case having my invention applied thereto. i
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts. v
Referring first to l igure '3, 1 designates a sheet of material, as leather, which has been initially preformed, moulded or pressed into the shape seen in said figure and 5 being preferably in one piece, and
formed or shaped by any suitable moulds or other means.
Themannerof securing the integral continuous flange 5, to the inner wall of the pocket or to the pocket book body will be understood from Figure 2, from which it will be seen that said flange 5 is placed against the flange 6 and around said flanges 5 and 6 is placed the U-shaped binding or stripping 7, through which the line of stitching 8 passes, whereby an extremely neat and finished appearance is given to the pocket book and a well defined pocket, as indicated at 9, is produced whose internal chamber is of substantially the same area in cross section throughout its vertical and longitudinal median lines. The lower portion of the pocket wall 2 can be provided In the construction shown in Figure 4,
I have shown the same general type of a pocket construction, wherein the pocket 9 is constructed of the pro-formed or moulded sheet or front wall 2 having the side walls 3, the bottom wall a and the flange 5 of the same construction as already described, 8 designating the line of stitching already referred to in Figs. 1 and 2. The pocket 9 seen in Figure a is provided with a suitable flap 13 and any suitable locking or fastening device can be employed therefor.
In Figure 5, I have shown my invention as applied to a cigarette case 1-3 wherein the construction of the pocket 9 is substantially the same as already described, said pocket 9 comprising the front pre-formed wall 2, having the pro-formed end walls 3, and the integral flange 5 of the same construction as already described, said flange 5 being held in position by or within the metallic framework 15 of the cigarette case.
It will be seen from the foregoing that in all the embodiments of my invention, the outer front wall of the pocket composed of a pre-formed or moulded sheet, comprising the outer portion or wall 2, the side Walls 3, the bottom wall 4 and the continuous foot or flange 5 integral with said walls 3 and 4 and extending around the ends and bottom of the sheet or wall 2. A pocket book constructed in accordance with my invention is very durable and its appearance is greatly enhanced by the pocket construction, of the character hereinabove described. It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful pocket construction for leather goods, which en'ibodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and .while I have in the present instance, shown and described preferred embodiments thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiments are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invent-ion or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pocket construction for leather goods a moulded sheet or wall for the pocket front comprising a front wall, inwardly extending end and bottom walls and a contiguous integral outer flange parallel to said front wall, the whole being integral and adapted to be stitched to the pocket book body, to form a pocket open at its top and closed at its sides and bottom, said pocket being of substantially the same dimension throughout its transverse and longitudinal median lines.
9-. A receptacle or the like having a compartment, a strip of material secured to one Wall thereof and having an outer flange, pre-moulded outer pocket member comprising a front wall having rearwardly extending end and bottom walls, an integral outer flange extending around the ends and bottom of said walls and parallel to said front wall, the pocket being open at its top, a binding strip enclosing the aforesaid strip and outer pocket flange, and a line of stitching extending through said binding strip and the contiguous flanges, whereby a well defined pocket is formed having substantially the same dimensions throughout its transverse and longitudinal median lines.
