IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,589, dated January 12, 1875; application filed October 19, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J EHU W. J OHNsON, of Columbus, county of Colorado, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specication:

My invention relates to fences made in sections or panels; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the ybrackets or supports for the panels, and also in the means for securing the panels to said supports, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to Which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I Will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part ot' this A.sprciicatioin and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fence, and Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the supports with the fastening-link and key detached.

Each panel is composed of a series of horizontal boards, A A, of suitable dimensions, with a hatten, B, nailed securelyv across the center, and a hatten, O, across each end, the end battens O C being on opposite sides of the panel. A hole is then bored through each end stile or hatten O, and through the second plank or board from the bottom, which completes the panel. Each support is constructed of a base-block, D, and bracket E. The base-block consists simply of a piece of scantling or other light timber of suitable dimensions; and these base-blocks are placed at regular intervals on top of the ground to receive the iron brackets E, which are made of rod-iron, bent to form an upright, a-,and an inclined brace, b, the upper part of the upright being double, as shown in Fig. 2. The end of the brace b is driven into the block D, While the end or foot of the upright a is made to turn up at the toe or end, thus forming an open clamp, d, to receive and securely hold the lower end of the batten when the fence is A fence of this construction has sufficient elasticity, strength, and durability to resist the Winds, ravages of stock, and, being linked together, will also resist a current of Water. No gates or bars are needed, as. a panel can be detached simply by drawing a key Without disturbing any other portion of the fence.

It will readily be seen that in the panels Wire may be substituted in a measure for the plank-that is to say, with upright cleats or batteus attached to two strips of plank at bottom and top, the middle portion Of the fence might be lilled up with Wire, Which could be made to pass through the battens or fastened to the outside, as preferred.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The bracket or support E, constructed, as described, of rodiron, bent to form the upright a, double at its upper end, the brace b, and open clamp d, and fastened to the baseblock D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
