IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DRAWERS AND FOLDING DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,421, dated January 5, 1875; application filed March 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN ADAMS KNIGHT, of Auburn, in .the county of Androscoggin and Stateof Maine, have invented a new and Improved Portable Folding DGSk-SHIfQCB, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawin gs, in which Figure 1 is a view of my desk surface attached to an ordinary drawer, and extended, showing both the front and back of the same. Fig. 2 is a View of the same when rolled up and placed in the drawer. Fig. 3 is a View of the extension-frame when folded seats to allow the desk-surface to be rolled up.
The object of the invention is the production of aportable desk-surface that can be affixed to an ordinary drawer, and which can be readily folded and rolled into a small compass.
The desksurface A is formed by gluing or otherwise fastening thin narrow strips of wood onto cloth or other suitable flexible material, which will allow it to be rolled into a small compass. The upper or outer edge has a ledge fastened to its under or cloth side, as shown at B, and the lower or inner edge is fastened to the folding frame 0. edge, as shown at E. By extending these arms so that the ends of them come in 0011- tact with ledge B, the desk-surface becomes rigid and ready for use by simply resting the under side of the frame on the edge of the as shown in Fig. 1. By folding the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, the desk-surface can. be rolled into a very compact form, as shown in Fig. 2, occupying but a small space in the drawer. The frame 0, being hinged at its inner edge by means of the pinsf f, working in brackets g g, which are fastened to the drawer, can be elevated to any required degree, as shown in Fig. 1. I claim as my invention and desire to socure by Letters Patent- A drawer, provided with brackets g g, in combination with the flexible desk-surface A and folding arms D D, by means of which the desk-surface maybe made rigid when said arms are extended, or flexible and capable of being rolled into a narrow compass when the folding arms are closed, substantially as described, and for the purpose set fortln:
