TIRE PATCH.
Application filed May 18, 1925.
My invention relates to improvements in tire patches.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a tire patch of novel structure, which when overlapped in its operative position embracing an inner tube can not .be expanded by the inflation of the tube.
A further object of my invention is the provision on the outer side of the body of the patch of indicating means arranged to co-operate with the outer edge of a flap joined to the body by which the flap may be readily and correctly positioned to obtain a desired diameter of the patch in its operative position. 1
Still another objectof my invention is the provision of indicating means on the outer side of the body adapted to register with the outer edge of a flap joined to the body by which the flap may be readily and cor rectly positioned to obtain different diameters of the body in the operative position of the latter.
Still another object 01 my invention is to provide a novel the patch which is simple, cheap, vdurable and which will be firmly held in the position to which it may be adjusted.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which i1- lustrates my invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the patch shown in 1 shown mounted in the operative position embracing an inner tube.
Fig. 3 is a reduced perspective view of the patch shown in Fig. 1, disposed in an open position. 1
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified iorm oi my improved patch having a single flap and shown in the open position.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the patch shown in Fig. 1 shown stretched out.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3, 1 designates the body of the patch, which may comprise a section of a tire casing, opposite edges of which have respectively joined to them two flaps 2 and 3. The flap 2 is provided on its inner side adjacent to its outer edge with a layer or strip 4; of adhesive material, which may be raw gum rubber, which may be nor- Serial No. 31,035.
mally protected, until the patch is being prepared for use, by a detachable strip of cloth 5, Fig. 1.
The flap 3 is correspondingly provided on its outer side adjacent to its outer edge with a similar layer of adhesive material 6, which 18 also normally protected by a detachable strip of cloth 7.
In the operation of the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the body 1 is made to embrace the inner tube 8, as'shown in Fig.
2, the cloth strips 5 and 7 having been prcviously detached, the outer edge of the flap 2 is brought into register with suitable in dicat-ing means provided on the outer side of the body 1, by which the proper diameter of the patch may be obtained to enable it to lit within the casing with which it is to be used.
Such indicating means may comprise two transverse parallel lines 9 and 10, adjacent to which respectively on the outer side of the body are suitable inscriptions 11 and 12, which designate different casing diameters, such as 3% regular size and 3 over size.
It the pat-ch is to be used in a regular size casing, the outer edge of the flap 2 is mad-e to register with the line 9. It the patch is to be used with an oversize casing, the flap 2 is made to register with the line 10.
If required, after the cloth strips 5 and 7 have been detached, a small amount 01 rubber solvent, such as gasoline, may be applied to the layers at. and 6. The flap. 2 when brought in register, as above described, is pressed against the body to make the layer 4: adhere to the body. The inner tube with the patch thereon is then placed within the casing and the inner tube inflated. Such inflation will cause the layer 6 to firmly adhere to the inner side of the body 1. The patch will thus be held from eX- panding by the layers 41 and 6, so that there is no liability of the hole in the casing, that the patch is intended to mend or cover, being expanded.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the body 1, is provided on its outer side with the indicating lines 9 and 10 and the inscriptions 11 and 12 in the same ifnanner as has been described herein be ore.
In this form of my invention, but one flap 13 is provided. It is joined to one edge of the body 1 and has the same function and mode of operation as the flap 2, but is preferably made longer, so as to have a greater overlapthan the flap 2. The flap 13 is provided on its inner side adjacent to its outer edge with a layer of adhesive material 4 having the same function and mode of operation as the layer 4c in the other form of my invention, and which is normally protected by a detachable cloth strip 5.
The patch shown in Figs. 4 and 5, is applied to the inner tube in the same manner as has been described with reference to the other form of my invention.
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A tire patch comprising two members, a body and a flap joined together, the outer side of the body having indicating means adapted to register with the outer edge of the flap for properly positioning the flap to obtain a desired diameter of the patch.
2. A tire patch comprising two members, a body and a flap joined together, the outer side of the body having a plurality of parallel indicating means disposed transversely and adapted each to register with the outer edge of the flap for properly positioning the flap to obtain different desired diameters of the patch.
3. A tire patch comprising two members, a body and a flap joined together, the outer side of the body having indicating means adapted to register with the outer edge of the flap for properly positioning the flap to obtain a desired diameter of the patch, one side of one of said members having a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the adjacent side of the other member, when the flap is in register with said indicating means.
4. A tire patch comprising two members, a body and flap joined together, the outer side of the body having indicating means adapted to register with the outer edge of the flap for properly positioning the flap to obtain a desired diameter of the patch, the flap having on its inside a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the outer side of the body when the flap is in register with said indicating means.
5. A tire patch comprising two members,
a body and a flap joined together, the outer side of the body having a plurality of transverse indicating means adapted each to register with the outer edge of the flap for properly positioning the flap to obtain different desired diameter of the patch, the flap on its inner side having a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the outer side of the body, when the flap is in register with either of said indicating means.
' 6. A tire patch comprising a body and two flaps respectively joined to opposite edges of the body, one of the flaps having on its inner side a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the outer side of the body, the outer side of the other flap having a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the inner side of the body.
7. A tire patch comprising a body and two flaps respectively joined to opposite edges of the body, the body on its outer side having indicating means adapted to register with the outer edge of one of said flaps, the other flap having on its outer side a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the inner side of the body.
8. A tire patch comprising a body and two flaps respectively joined to opposite edges of the body, the body on its outer side having two parallel transverse indicating means each adapted to register with the outer edge of one of said flaps, and adhesive means by whichsaid flaps may be made to adhere respectively to the outer and inner sides of the body.
9. A tire patch comprising a body and two flaps respectively joined to opposite edges of the body, the body on its outer side having indicating means adapted to register with the outer edge of one of said flaps, one of the flaps having on its inner side a layer of adhesive material adapted to adhere to the outer side of the body, the other flap having on its outer side a layer of adhesive material adapted. to adhere the inner side of the body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
