UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS QUOINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,351, dated January 5, 1875; application filed October 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ALLEN, of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printers Quoins, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a printers chase with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a View of my improved quoin. Fig. 3 is a different view of the same.
My improvement relates to quoins for the use of letter-press printers; and it consists in so constructing the head of the screw used as to secure a bearing sufficient to hold the quoin parallel to the side of the chase.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out. i
In the drawings, A represents a letter-press printers chase with the form locked up. B is the quoin, constructed of any suitable metal, and provided with the central screw 0, having the head flattened at c, and brought to a smooth surface perfectly parallel to the line The head is made sufficiently large to afford as large a bearing-surface. as possible, and to this end Imake it of a diameter nearly equal to the thickness of the chase, and the sides of the head square or hexagonal, so that the screw can be operated with a wrench to lock up or unlock a form of types.
A quoin thus constructed is perfect in its operation, simple in its construction, and not likely to get out of order. 7
I am aware that metal quoins have been constructed with screws, but not with head's having bearing-surfaces to hold the quoin parallel with the side of the chase, two screws having been used for that purpose, and the quoin requiring a proper adjustment, while by my improvement the quoin always maintains its parallel position, and is made to bear equally its whole length against the form.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A printers quoin, B, constructed of suitable metal, and provided with a central screw, 0, having a hexagonal or square flat-faced head 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
BENJAlVILN F. ALLEN.
