To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, RICHARD LEWIS BERRY, a citizen of the' United States, residing at Orangeburg,in the county of Orangeburg and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Bea'rings for Form-Rollers of Printing- Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in journal-bearings for the form-rollers of printing-presses, andhas for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive adjustable bearing whereby the formroller may be readily and convenientlyraised up from the type-form and moved out of contact with the feed-roller when the press is at rest to prevent flattening of said rollers.
To this end the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevational view of my invention as it appears in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bearin g adjusted to raise the form-roller up from the type-form and move it out of contact with the feed-roller. Fig. 3 is a side view of the complete bearing. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of same on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the post or standard thereof, and Fig. 6 is a similar view ofthe socket or hub members.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, A represents a form-roller, B an ink feeding or distributing roller, and O the surface-line of the type-form of a printing-press, the said form-roller being mounted, as usual, upon a shaft, one end of which is designated in Figs. 1 and 2 by the letter D and is illustrated as being journaled in an adjustable bearing constructed in accordance with this invention. This bearing comprises in its construction a post or standard E, provided with a cylindrical head F, projecting on opposite sides thereof in a direction transversely of the-type-form, and this head is formed at each side with a stop lug or shoulh and h, one of which is located at the center between said stop-shoulders and the other on the same side as the stop-shoulder g and a little to the left of and above the first-named notch. Mounted on the head of the post is a socket or hub I, which forms the bearing for the end of the form-roller shaft D. This hub is provided in its upper side with a longitudinal recess or opening for the reception of said shaft end and in its under side with a chamber or socket 70, adapted to receive and embrace one-half of the circumference of the head, whereby it is adapted to turn thereon. At each end of the hub is a depending bearing-lug Z and Z, mounted upon the projecting ends of a shaft or pintlem, extending through the'bore of the head, said lugs being relatively narrower than the base portion of the body of the hub proper, whereby shoulders or side flanges n and n are formed,which are adapted to engage the stop-shoulders g and g to limit the oscillatory movement of the hub in both directions. Pivoted between ears 0, projecting from the outer lug Z, is a latch device 19, provided with a handle (1, an upper arm and a lower arm 3. The said lower arm projects under the head F and is provided with a locking projection t, adapted to engage either one of the notches h or 71/ therein to lock the hub against casual turning, and seated in the opening in the said lug Z is a spiral spring a, which bears against the upper arm of the latch and normally holds the bit of the locking-arm in engaging position. By means of the handle the latch may be operated and the hub also moved in either direction.
, The operation of the inventionwill be fully understood from the above description,taken in connection with Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that when the hub is moved beyond the perpendicular to the right the side flange it bears against the stop-shoulder g, the bit of the latch engages the notch h, and the formroller is thereby maintained in contact with the type-form and feed-roller. When it is desired to raise the form-roller up from the type-form and move it out of contactwith the feed-roller, the latch is released and the hub turned to the left, which brings it to the horizontal position. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The side flange it now abuts against the stop-shoulder g, and. the latch-bit is engaged with the notch h to lock the hub in this position. While the bearing made the subject of illustration in the present instance is adapted only for use on one side of the feed-roller, the bearings in practice will be made in rights and lefts, so as to be. adapted for adjusting form-rollers on opposite sides of the feedroller in reverse directions to throw the same into, and out of operation.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact features of construction and arrangement set forth as constituting its preferred form, but that these maybe modified in certain respects, as circumstances or the judgment of those skilled in the art may dictate, without departing from the essential features of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A j ournal-bearing for the form-rollers of printing-presses,consistin g of a post or standard provided at its upper end with a head, a hub having a recess in its upper face to receive the journal of the form-roller shaft, a chamber in its lower face t6 receive the upper portion of the head and depending bearing-lugs mounted to oscillate on said head, and a latch device carried by one of said lugs to engage the head.
2. A journal-bearing for the form-rollers of printing-presses, consisting of a post or standard provided at its upper end with a head having stop-shoulders on opposite sides thereof arranged in different horizontal planes, a hub having a recess in its upper face to receive the journal of the form-roller shaft, a chamber in its lower face to receive the upper portion of the head, side shoulders to engage the said stop-shoulders on the head, depending end lugs mounted to oscillate on the head, and a latch device carried by the hub to engage the head.
3. A j onrnal-bearin g for the form-rollers of printing-presses, consisting of a post or standard provided at its upper end with a head having notches in the under side thereof, a hub having a chamber in its under side to receive the upper portion of the head and depending end lugs mounted to oscillate on the head, and a pivoted latch device mounted upon one of said lugs and provided with a handle and upper and lower arms, the latter arm having a locking projection to engage the notches in the head, and a spring on said lug bearing against the upper arm of the latch.
4. A journ al-bearin g for the form-rollers of printing-presses, comprising a post or standard provided with a head having stop-shoulders on opposite sides thereof arranged in different horizontal planes, and notches, a hub pivoted thereto and provided with side shoulders coacting with those on the hub to limit its movement, a latch device pivoted to the hub and provided with a handle and upper and lower arms, the latter being adapted to engage the notches in the head to lock the hub thereto, and a spring on the hub bearing against said upper arm, substantially as described.
