ALFRED .G. F. KUROWSKI, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR E UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
TYPEWRITING MACHINE.
Application filed August 20, 192 1. Serial No. 733,065..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. Kunow- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn Borouglninthe county of Kings, city and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means for holding cards in position on the platen.
One of the features of this invention is the provision of a card-holder that will firinly hold the card and at the same time prop erly gage it in position on the platen.
Another feature is the provision of means for positioning said card-holder on the platen, and means for firmly holding it, which takes up a minimum of space. The card-holder is simple and economical to manufacture, and readily attached and detached from the machine.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front view of atypewriter platen with the present improvements applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view showingthe means for positioning and securing the card-holder on the platen.
Figure 3 is a side view showing the cardholder in released position.
Figure 1 is a side View showing a card in position in the holder.
Figure 5 is-a fragmentary front view partly in section.
Figure 6 is 'a diagrammatic perspective showing the curvature of the card-holder.
Referring to the drawings, a platen 10 is mounted on a shaft 11 journaled in frames 12. A hand-wheel 13 is fixed to eachend of said shaft- 11 for convenient rotation of said platen 10 to .carry a work-sheet, illustrated as-a card lt around said platenbetween rear table 15 and front and rear pressure rolls 16 and 17, respectively, upwardly in front of the printing point indicated as a type-bar 18..
' The present invention is concerned with means for holding said card 1% in a secure and proper position for typing. A cardholder '19 comprises a body-portion .20 extending the length of said platen 10 and terminating in downwardly-extending flanges 21, said body-portion 2( conforming to the curvature of the platen l0. Fastened to :each of said flanges 21 is a pin 22. Said bodyportion is provided with beveled longitudinal edges 23 .and '24 forming undercut portions 25 and 26, which leave spaces 27 and 28, between said beveled edges 23-and 2 1, respectively, and the surface of the platen 10 into either of which spaces is inserted the end of card 14. Said under-cut portions 25 and 26 create longitudinal shoulders 29 :and 30, respectively, against either of which rests the end of card let to guide it in position on the platen. These shoulders 29 and 30 also serve to limit the introduction of said card ll. Formed on each of said longitudinal edges 23 and 2 1, at opposite ends of the body-portion 20, is a lug or side gage 31 which is provided with a fiat edge 32 against which the side edge of said card 1 1 rest-s to guide it in proper positionon the platen 10. These lugs .31 are also beveled to form cams so as to facilitate "the movementof the holder .19 over the rear table 15 and feed-rolls 16 and 17. As will be apparent, each of the shoulders 29 and 30 forms an end gage for card lt and each of the lugs 31 forms a side gage for said card 1 1.
To vafiord :means to properly position the card-holder 19 on the platen and to securely hold the same thereon, use is made of the end plates 33 of platen l0 and :the hubs 34 of said end plates 33. Secured to each of said end plates '38, at a point adjacent its circumference, is a guide-member 35 00111- prising upwardly-extending prongs 36 and S7, whichprongs 36 and 37eXt-end upwardly to a point substantially flush with the surface of said platen 10. As will be seen from Figure 3, when the card-holder 19 is to be mounted in position on the platen 10, the side edges of said flanges 21 are brought into alignment with the inner edges of prongs 86 and 37, so that said flanges '21 may ride downwardly freely between said prongs 86 and 37, but said flanges 21 are snugly held therebetween to prevent the shifting of saidholde-r 19-011 the platen. IBecauseof the flexibility of the holder 19, due to its slightly concave form, as shown in Figure 6, said holder tends to spring-off the platen 10, and means must be provided to securely hold the same thereon. This means, in the present invention, is shown as a lever-member 38 pivoted on each of the end plates 83 or the platen 10 by means of a flat-headed screw 39. The flat head of said screw 39 serves as a guide to keep the lever 38 from lateral movement. The long arm at) of said lever 38 terminates in a pawl 41 having an inclined iace l2. The end of the short arm l3 of said lever 38 has formed thereon a lug l Surrounding this lug ski is a compression spring l5, one end of which seats in a bore all formed in the hub All of end plate 33, and the other end of which seats on the shoulder a? formed on the short arm l3 of the lever 38. Said long arm lf, it will be noted, is slightly curved, as indicated at $8, to dispose the pawl all in a plane to enable it to move "tree of the guide-meniber 35 and the flange 21. The short arm 23 is also curved outwardly, as indicated at 49, to permit the compression spring l5 to be seated in the hub 34. l".-.s will be apparent from Figure 3, the pawl all normally lies in the path of the downward movement of pin 22, so that, when the holder 19 is being pressed into position, said pin rides downwardly over the inclined face 42 of pawl =ll and over the nose-portion of said pawl l1 to the position shown in Figure d' hen it is desired to release said card-holder 19 from the platen for performing othekinds of work. the lever 38 is roclzed "from its engagement with said pin by means of a knob 51 fastened to a lug 52 formed on the long arm %0 adjacent the pawl l1. llhen the holder 19 is in position on the platen 10, it will be noted that its flanged portions 21 and guide-members are disposed in the same vertical plane, and the lever-member S8, with its associated parts, is so mounted as not to interfere with any of the parts of the machine disposed outside of the hub 34;. By reason of this arrangement, a compact structure is provided. It will also be noted that the pivotal point, indicated by the screw 39 of the lever 38, is in alignment with the pin 22 of flange 21, when the holder 1 is in position, which, with the long arm it), permits a greater leverage to more firmly secure the card-holder 19 in position.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
