Be it known that I, ALFRED G. F. KUROW- em, a citizen of the United States, former- 1y a citizen of Germany, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county ofKings, city and State of New fork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type writing lrfachines, of which thefollowing is a SPGOlIi'lCtltlOIl lhis invention relates to devices for clamping cards or work-pieces to a cylintour of theplaten. Due to the resiliency of the clamping plate, it may serve to clamp to "the platen a card or work-member, inserted beneaththe free edge of said clamping plate,
when the latter is raised from the platen. I Provision is also made of paper-stops,
preferably in the form of pins, secured to the resilient plate near its clamping edge,
and of an edge-guide, preferably in the form of a tongue out from the metal of said plate, adjacent its edge, and turned to, a positionsubstantially at a right angle with said plate. The paper-stops and the edgeguide .project into suitable depressionsin the platen. By virtue of this construction theclampingplate, paper-stops and edgeguidemay all be attached to, or removed from, the platen simultaneously.
Provision is also made of means to control the effective or inefiective position of the clamping plate. For this purpose, a camming shaft, which serves to control the position of the clamping plate, is plvotally supported at one end in the closed end of a trough-shaped member, secured in adepression in the platen, and ispivotally supported at the other end in a bracket, secured to the head of the platen, the camming shaft, when in normal position, being substantially flush with the surface of the platen, but prowith, and means are provided for limiting the movement of the finger-piece with reference to the ad acent bracket.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

and with the platen turned to bring the card, clamped thereon, to position for cooperation with the type-bars.
The platen'l, of the usual type, comprises a surface layer 2, of rubber or other suitable material, mounted on a hollow wooden cylinder or core 3, which is supported by means of heads l, on an axle 5. Said axle 5 is'journaled in end-frames 6 of the platen-frame,
and is provided, at its ends, with fingerwhecls 7, only one of which is shown.
At the left end of the platen-frame, a line space-ratchet-wheel 8 is secured to said axle 5, the ratchet-wheel-actuating pawl 9 and the slide 10, on which it is pivoted, being indicated in dot-and-dash lines on Figure l.
The card-holder proper consists of a resilient plate 11, provided, at its forward edge, with a flange portion 12, which is inserted in a kerf or slot in the platen, the clamping plate being secured to the platen by screws 13. The width of the cards being usually less than the length of the platen, a clamping plate, less in length than the cylinder, is provided. Said plate 11 follows closely the contour of the platen surface, and its free edge serves to press against the platen acard placed thereunder. in order to prevent the work from being inserted too far under said clamping plate 11, provision is made of pins 14, fixed in said plate near its clamping edge, the platen being provided with suitable recesses to receive the pins. Near the left end of said plate 11, a tongue 15 is formed by a cut normal to the clamping edge and a cut parallel thereto. The tongue 15, thus formed, is turned downwardly from the plate 11, to serve as an edge-guide, and projects into a suitable recess provided in the platen.
In order to lift the clamping edge ofplate 11, to permit the insertion of a card thereunder, use is made of a camming shaft or cam-rod 16, having a flattened face 17, the cross-section of said shaft 16 being in the form of, a segment of a circle. The reduced inner end 18 of shaft 16 is mounted'in a bearing formed in the closed inner end of a trough-shaped member 19, secured in any suitable manner in a groove or depression in the platen; and a reduced portion 20, at the outer end ofsaid shaft 16, is supported in a bearing in a bracket 21, attached to the platen-head by screws 22 or other suitable means. The shoulders at the ends of the reduced portions 18 and 20 of shaft 16 engage with the bearings, and prevent longitudinal movement of the shaft. It will be seen that when the flat face 17 of the camming shaft is turned outwardly, it will be substantially flush with the surface of the platen, and will permit the clamping plate 11 to lie close to the surface of the platen, but that, when the shaft 16 is turned from its normal posit-ion, the plate 11 will be pressed outwardly, to )ermit a card to be inserted thereunder. Upon turning the camming shaft back to its normal position, after such insertion, the
card will be clamped to the platen.
23 is secured to the reduced outer end 20 of shaft 16. A pin 24, mounted in the fingerpiece 23, projects into an arcuate slot 25 in bracket 21, thus providing means for limiting the movement of the finger-piece with reference to the bracket. Upon reference to Figure 5, it will be seen that finger-piece 23, when in its normal position, does not interfere with the rotation of the platen.
\Vhen a card is to be inserted, the platen is turned to the position; shown in Figure 4, and finger-piece 523 is moved from the position shown in Figure 5 to that in Figure 4, thus raising the clamping edge of plate 11 sufiiciently to permit insertion of a card 26. Thelingenpiece 23 is then returned to its normal position, shown in Figure 5, and the platen turned,'to carry the clamping plate and card over the usual pressure-feed-rollers I The card may then be advanced by means of H finger-wheels 7, or by the line-spaoe-pawl, 9, while typewriting on said card, and the card may be released by manipulation of the linger-piece 23.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with aplaten, of a resilient plate secured thereto, and having one edge pressing against said platen to clamp a work-member thereagainst, and means to control the position of the clamping edge of said plate, comprising a cammember pivotally supported at one end of said platen and normally flush with the surface of the platen, and at a point intermediate the ends of said platen, said cammember lying in a depression in said platen, and being so formed that when turned from its normal position, it will be effective to engage said plate, and move the clamping edge to ineffective position.
2. The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a resilient clamping plate extending from one end of the platen to a point intermediate the ends thereof, and controlling means for said clamping plate, comprising a camming shaft, and a trough-shaped member in said platen, said member being open at its outer end and closed at its inner end, said camming shaft being pivoted in the inner end of said trough-shaped member, and supported on the platen-head, adjacent the open end of said trough.
The combination with a cylindrical platen, of a resilient clamping plate extending from one end of the platen to a point intermediate the ends thereof, and controlling means for said clamping plate, comprising a trough-shaped member set in a recess in said platen, underlying said clamping plate, said trough-shaped member being closed at its inner end, a bracket on the head of said platen, adjacent the open end of said trough-shaped member, and a camming shaft in said trough-shaped member pivoted in the closed end thereof and in said bracket.
4. The combination with a platen, comprising a head, of a clamping plate secured at its forward edge to said platen, and extending from said head to a pointintermediate the ends of said platen, paper-stops and an edge-guide on said plate, and controlling means for said plate.
5. The combination with a platen, comprising a head, of a. clamping plate, extending from said head along a part of the length of said platen, and controlling means for said plate, comprising a trough-shaped member underlying said plate in a depression in said platen and closed at its inner end, a bearing in the closed inner end of said trough-shaped member, a bracket secured to said head, and provided with a bearing in alignment with the first-mentioned bearing, a camming shaft mounted in said bearings, and adapted to engage said plate, and render the same ineffective, and a finger-piece mounted on said camming shaft, for operating the same;
6. The combination With a platen, comprising a head, and having a groove extending from said head to a point intermediate the ends of said platen, of a resilient clamping plate overlying said groove, a bearing secured in said groove at its inner end, a bearing on said head in alignment With said first-mentioned bearing, and a camming device mounted in said bearings, the rotative position of said camming device being determinative of the effectiveness of "said clamping plate.
7. The combination With a platen, comprising a head, of a clamping plate extending along part of the length of said platen, a bearing secured to said platen, under the inner end of said plate, a bracket supported on said head, a camming shaft supported in said bearing and journaled in said bracket, a finger-piece for controlling said shaft, and co-operative devices on said bracket and said finger-piece, to limit the movement of the latter.
8. The combination With a platen, of a resilient plate secured thereto, and having one edge pressing against said platen to clamp a Work-member thereagainst, and means to control the position of the clamping edge of said plate comprising a cammember pivotally supported in a'lengthvvise depression in said platen and normally flush with the surface of the platen, and being so formed that when turned from its normal position it Will be effective to engage said plate and move the clamping edge to ineffective position.
