7 IMPROVEMENT IN RANGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,239., dated December 29, 1874; application filed November 7, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN O. BRINGKER- HOFF, of the city, county, and State of New York,.have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Range, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a front view of my improved range, part of the shelf being broken away to show its construction. Fig. 2, Sheet 1, is a horizontal section of the same, taken through the line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a vertical section of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a detail top view of the detachable lower part of the same.

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

A represents the outer case of the range, the front wall of which and a portion of the end walls are made double, and with an airspace within them, to prevent the outward radiation of the heat. B is the inner case, which surrounds the oven, and between the top, ends, back, and bottom of which, and

the top, ends, back, and bottom of the case A,

the products of combustion pass from the firebox 0 to the chimney-flue D. The fire-box 0 is located in the upper forward middle part of the oven, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The space between the ends of the cases A and B is divided into a number of vertical flues by vertical division-plates E, and the space be tween the backs of the said cases A and B is divided into a number of vertical flues by vertical division-plates F, the division-plates E and F extending down to the bottom of the inner case B. The spaces between the bottoms of the cases A and B is occupied by a drawer, G, the interior of which is divided into two equal parts by a vertical division-plate, g passing through its center from front to rear. The side parts of i the drawer G are divided into flues by vertical division-plates 9 extending from the ends of said drawer G nearly to the central division-plate g, and which are so placed as to be directly beneath the end division-plates E, and serve as continuations of said plates E. The rear divisionplates E and g are placed a little in front of the rear wall of the inner case B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The spaces between the inner ends of the rear division-plates g and. the central division-plate g are provided with dampers H, which are raised and lowered, to close and open said spaces, by handles I, extending out at the front of the drawer G. D is the flue for conducting the products of combustion from the range to the chimney, and

which projects in the rear of the middle part of the back of the outer case A, as shown in Fig. 2, and which is designed to fit into a recess formed to receive it in the brickwork inclosing the rear part of the range, so as to leave the top of the rangewholly unobstructed. The flue D is divided into two equal parts by a vertical division-plate, d, which is in the same vertical plane as, and serves as a contin uation of, the division-plate g of the drawer G. The openings into the flue D are formed through the lower middle part of the back wall of the case A, and are in line with the spaces at the sides of the central divisionplate g of the drawer G. J is the shelf, upon which the upper oven and the waterboiler are placed, and which is made double, and with an air-space between its parts, to prevent the radiation of heat from said oven and boiler, or rather from the flues that conduct the products of combustion around said oven and boiler to heat them. The upper forward part of the flue D is also made double, to prevent the radiation of heat from the products of combustion while passing up through the said flue D. The flue Dis provided with a damper, K, to enable the draft to be regulated as required. L are the oven-doors, which are made with double walls, having an air-space between them to prevent the radiationof heat. This construction of the range allows the lower part G to be drawn out to remove dust and ashes, and thus conveniently clean out the flues.

WVhen the range is to be used for baking and roasting, the dampers H are 10 wered or opened, which causes the products of combustion to pass down through the flues at the back and ends of the inner case or oven B, the products of combustion that pass down through the end flues passing through the flues or spaces between the division-plates g and along the opposite sides of the central divisionplate 9 through the lower part of the rear space, and into the flue D.

When the range is to be used for boiling, the dampers H are raised or closed, which causes the products of combustion to pass down only at the rear of the inner case or oven B and into the flue D, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the plates E, at the bottom and ends placed in the same vertical plane, a little in front of the back plate of the inner case B, and provided with dampers H, to divide the draft-spaces of the range into EDWIN O. BRINGKERHOFF.
