To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that LKATHRYN M. GON- NALLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Guards for Earrings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.
y invention relates to mprovements in safety guards for ear rings, and it consists rangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a guard that will serve to prevent the loss of the ear ring through the unintentional loosening .or breakage of the fastening means. The ordinary type of ear ring is provided witha screw clamp that is pressed into the lobe of the ear to hold the ear ring in place. It is not an uncommon occurrence for this clamp to become loosened and the ear ring lost without knowledge of the occurrence to the wearer.
A further object. of my invention is to provide a safety guard for ear rings which is practically invisible, since the greatest part of the guard is disposed behind the ear.
A'further object of my invention is to provide a. device of the character described that is-simple' in' construction, durable, and thorough] practical commercially.
Other 0 jects and advantages will, appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forrfiing part of this application, 1n 'wh1ch Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention operatively applied.
, In carrying out my invention, I make use of the ordinary type of ear ring 1 having ornaments 2'supported by a stirrup 3. The stirrufi 3 'isdprovided with a substantially smoot roun ed port-ion 4 which may be referred to as the pad. A threaded locking bar or screw 5 is carried by the opposite branch of the stirrup and is in 'alinement with the pad 4. The 'screw 5 is provided 5 may be turned.
in the combinations, constructions, and ar- N by means of the bolt '10 so that it may be with a suitable clamping surface 6 and a knurled knob 7 by means of ,which the screw So far, file structure defined is structure I common to the ordinary type of ear rin My improvement or safety guard which 1s attached to the ear ring comprises a chain 8 having a ring 9 at the lower end thereof, whichring is disposed concentric the stirrup 3. This ring 9 is the ordinary spring closed type and may. be -opened manually rerfioved from the stirrup or replaced at m a A resilient hook 11 is secured t -the opposite end of the chain 8, as shown at 12. Thishook 11 is formed so that it will closely grip that portion ofthe human ear intermediate the head and the shell of the ear.
It will be appare t therefore that the guard, is practically concealed by the shell part of the ear and therefore does not prosent an obtrusive appearance if the perso wearing the ear rings choosesto dress th hair above the ears.
From the foregoing descri tion of the various parts .of the device, t e operation thereof may be readily understood. Let us assume that the ear rin shown in Fi re 1 is worn upon'the ear 0 a erson, an that the screw 5 has graduall become loosened without knowledge to t e wearer. When the, screw becomes sufiicientl loose, the ear ring may drop free of 'the obe ofthe ear. This is not an uncommon occurrence, especially in the case of the ear rin having relatively heavy ornaments whic styles decree from time to time.
ornament the other arm, an ear-engaging member disposed at the inner end of said screw, 9. pendantslidably disposed on said U-shaped arm and carryin an ornament, and means removably an slidably secured to said U- shaped member for connecting the device to the ear, said means comprising a hooksha ed member for removably en%aging wit the car, an eyelet clasp removab y disposed upon said U-shaped member and be- 10 mg ada ted to slide therealon and a, chain connecting said clasp to sai hook-shaped member.
KATHRYN M. CONNALLY.
