PIANOFORTE.
Application led April 19, 1923. -Selal No. 633,258.
To all whom may concern.:
Be it known that we, HENRI Foonii, a citizen ot the French Republic, residing at 35 rrvenue Gallieni, Villemonble, Seine, France, and Fi-:ninio Mmm, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at 2 Cite des Foyers, Pantin, Seine, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pianofortes, ot which the following is the specification.
rlhis invention has for its objects an improvement in the manufacture of pianos.
The piano forming the subject matter of the invention comprises, as other known pianos, a cast iron trame behind which the sounding-board, provided with a wooden framing ot small cross section, is secured for instance by means of screws passing through the said framing and screwing into the cast iron fra-me.
In the known pianos of this type, the pressure ot the springs on the bridges has the eifiect ot producing between the cast iron trame and the sounding-board a cert-ain` play or clearance, as the screws and the light wooden frame cannot withstand the distortion of the sounding-board. When the wooden frame is ot large cross section this is avoided, but the width of the piano is increased. Besides, whatever may be the cross section of the wooden trame, the shrinkage ot the wood owing to drying, produces some play in the assemblage.
The improvement forming the subject mattei' oi' the invention is adapted to produce a piano oit' the above mentioned type, iu which the wooden frame, is of small dimensions but in which, however, the above stated detects are overcome.
The invention consists in the arrangement of an intermediate wooden member having an L-shaped cross-section, secured on the edge ot' the wooden trame of the soundingboard, and the iront ledge oi' which iits over the ledge of the cast iron frame, this intermediate member being secured .by screws on the castiron trame and on the wooden trame and the side of the pianoforte being glued on this intermediate member.
T he accompanying drawings illustrate, by v. ay of example, one form ot vcarrying out this invention.
Fig. l is a rear elevation of a device in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation ot the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view.
Fig. el is a plan View on an enlarged scale., parts being shown in section. l A
l designates the side of the body of the pianoforte, 2 the sounding-board, 8 the wooden framing ot' this sounding-board and l the cast-iron trame having a forwardly eX- tending ledge and on which the soundingboard is removably secured by screws l0.
A wooden member 5 having an L-shaped cross-section is secured on the framing 3 and on the plate l by screws 8 and 9.
This member is provided at its front part with a ledge ll whichbears against the front ledge of the plate i thus forming an abutment which securely andr invariably holds the cast-iron frame against the sounding-board 2.
Consequently, the pressure of the springs, which has a tendency to distort the sounding-board in the direction of the arrow l2, cannot produce any play between the trame e and the table 2.
It is moreover to be noted that the assemblage thus effected tends to contract in proportion to the shrinkage of the wooden member 5, as this contraction is always greater than that of the member 3, the member 5 being wider.
The side l of the body'is glued on the member 5 and, for greater security, connected to the latter by screws 6 and 7 which respectively pass through the framing 3 and the ledge of the cast-iron frame 4.
The assemblage thus carried out forms a very homogeneous whole and indefinitely preserves an absolute rigidity.
What we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a piano, a sounding-board, a wooden trame placed on one side of the soundingboard, a cast-iron frame having a ledge and placed on the other side of the soundingboard, screws passing through the `wooden frame and the sounding-board and screwing in the cast-iron frame, a wooden member having an L-shaped cross-section, an inner tace of which covers the joints of the wooden frame, sounding-board and castiron frame and the other inner face of which covers the ledge of the east-iron frame, means connecting the wooden member having an L-shaped cross-section to the wooden trame and cast-iron trame, and means for securing a side ot' the piano to the wooden member having an L-shaped cross-section.
2. In e piano, a sounding-board, e Wooden frame placed on one side of the Soundingbouid, a cus-iion frame having e ledge and placed on Jthe othei1 side of the soundingbofud, Screws passing' through the Wooden frame and the Sounding-board, and screw ing in the Ges-iron fiume, e Wooden member having an L-shaped cioss-seeion an inner face of which coveis the joints oi the Wooden frame, soundingbozud :md oestiion frame. and the oher inner face of which covers the ledge oi the @esst-iron framea Screws passig through 'the Wooden memhei` having sm i.-Shupe i Cross-section and screwing in Jshe Wooden frame, serews passing hiough the Wooden member having an L- sheped cross-section and sei'ewiiig in 'the cast-iron, "frame, Sciews passing Jhrough the Wooden frame and sereuiug in the member of L-Shaped eioss-Seeti 21 and in a Side of Jehe piene, and screws passing through 'the eastiron frame md serewmw in the member of L-shaped Cross-section and in the seid side of the pianofoie.
In testimony whereof We have signed oui1 names to this specification. f
HENR E. FREDERC MARIN.
