Abstract
538,671. Pianofortes. KNIGHT, A. E. March 15, 1940, No. 4885. [Class 88 (ii)] For improving the tonal value of a pianoforte soundboard 1 a stiffening rib 5 is affixed to the bridgecarrying side of the board and arranged substantially parallel with, and relatively narrowly spaced from, the bridge 4, the rib extending across the bass zone and terminating at, or close to, the treble zone. The rib is preferably substantially thinner than the bridge, e.g. oneeighth of an inch thick, and may be tapered at its treble end to a point. The rib may also be formed with narrow transverse gaps opposite the diagonal stiffening bars 3 on the rear side of the board. Specification 477,297 is referred to.
