PREss BUTTON AND-LIKE FASTENING FORUSE'VJITI-IFLEXIBLE MATERIALs.
/ Application filed December 15, 1924. Serial -l\To. 756,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SIDNEY CHARLES HARRISON and Han-11v Inns, British subjects, residing at Bradford Street Works, Brad ford Street, in the city of'Birmingham, England, have invented cert'ain new and useful Improvements Relating to Press Buttons, and like Fastenings for Use with Flexible Materials, of 'which the following is a Specification.
This'inventionrelates to press buttons and like fastenings foifuse with flesiblefmate- 1'ials,"and liasfor its object to pr'ovi'de an improved fastening adapted for securing the fabric, leather, orlike portions of motor vehicle covers to the body parts" or for any other similar purpose.
The invention comprises the combination with one part of the fastening, of a hollow rotatable releasing member formed with a pair of transverse slots across which lie a pair of resilient locking pieces adapted to engage a necked or grooved portion on the other part of the fastening, together with means as hereinafter described for preventing displacement of the locking pieces and disconnection of the same from the releasing member.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings a n d and and shown, the hollow body of the fasteningcontaining the releasing member and looking pieces is made up from a pair of sheet metal parts-a and b. The outer one (a) is flanged around its periphery, and at the periphery a number of tongue pieces 0, :Z are formed, these being adapted to pass through the inner part b and the tongue pieces 0 when bent over serve to secure the two parts together. The tongue pieces (Z on the outer part are made longer and pass through the inner part, as well as the material as e to which the fastening is to be secured, and also through a back plate f, the
said tongue pieces being bent over to hold the fastening in position.
Through'a centralaperture in the outer part th e hollow-body a cylindrical hollow releasing piece '9; is rotatably mounted. Preferably this is inade with a closed outer end adapted to serveas a knob'or finger grip. Thejreleasing piece-may be made from sheet metal or from solid rod. Across the portion which lies within the' b a se the releasing piece is formed with a pair of diametrically arranged transverse slots-h, and within the base arearrange'd a pair of similar springlocking pieces 1' for engaging saids'lotsQ Each locking-{piece is fcrmed-by bending a length of hard wire so that a part lies around the interior of the. peripheral portion of the hollow base and the other lies across the outside of the releasing piece, the portion engaging a slot in the latter being arranged to project into the interior of the releasing piece. If desired both locking pieces may be provided by bending a single length of hard wire.
On the inner part b of the base projections j, is, are pressed up into the interior of the base. Two of them j serve to limit the extent to which the locking pieces can be separated by the releasing piece, and a third is lies between the adjacent ends of the locking pieces or otherwise engages them to prevent rotation or other displacement.
The fastening co-operates with a shouldered or grooved part Z adapted to be secured by means of a screwed stem m or otherwise. Vhcn the one part of the fastening is pressed over the head of the other, the locking pieces first move apart and finally spring together behind the head into the groove and so secure the parts together. To release the parts the releasing piece is rotated sufficiently to expand the locking pieces out of engagement with the groove of the other part; the two parts can then be separated.
It will be understood that the locking pieces above described serve the double function of holding the releasing piece in position and holding together the two parts of the fastenings.
Although the constructional details above described are preferred, they may be varied to meet different requirements, but in all forms the essential features of the invention are the same.
Having thus described our invention what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In fastenings of the kind specified, the combination comprising a two part body, a hollow rotatable releasing member formed with a pair of transverse slots, resilient locking pieces lying across said slots, a separate grooved or necked complementary part engageable by the said locking pieces, projections formed integrally with one of the members of the two part body, certain of said projections being arranged immediately adjacent the portions of the resilient locking pieces lying across said slots and engageable by said portions incident to rotary move ment of the releasing member to positively limit the rotary motion of said releasing member.
2. In fastenings of the type specified, the combination comprising a hollow two part body, a hollow rotatable releasing member passing into the interior of the body through one of the body parts and terminating at the outer end in a finger piece, the portion of the said releasing member within the body being formed with a pair of transverse slots, spring locking pieces arranged within and having portions thereof engaged with the body and having other portions in engagement with the slots in the releasing member, a separate grooved or necked complementary fastening part adapted to enter the hollow releasing member and engageable by the locking pieces, and a projection on the other part of the body engaged between the ends of the first mentioned portions of the locking pieces for preventing displacement of the locking pieces.
A fastening as claimed in claim 2 characterized in that other of said projections are arranged at diametrically opposed points of the releasing member and contiguous to the portions of the locking pieces lying in the slots in the releasing member to limit rotation of the latter.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
SIDNEY CHARLES HARRISON. HARRY ILES.
