GOMBINATIOIT ROUND CURLER AND 111mm) TRUE MARCEL WAVING IRON.
Application filed August is, 1924. Serial No. 732,801.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, RAYMOND D. Donn- ANVILLE, GLADYS DONDANVILLE, and VIRGINIA G. HORNBEGK, citizens ofthe United States, residing in Kansas City, inthe county 'of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Round Curler and Edged True Marcel Waving. Iron, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in hair dressing appliances and has particular reference to a true marcel wave.
The object of this invention is to provide means of securing a strand of hair in posi tion between a circular heating unit and a high lipped-matrix; mounted on the heating un1t is a double edged detachable, slid-'- able comb, operative either right or left hand, thereby enabling any person without previous training to dress her own hair producing the edged true zigzag Marcel wave. I
To that end theinvention consists in a novel arrangement and constructionof parts in combination with particular constructed high lips of the curling iron matrix, which produces the edged true or crest of the Marcel wave, as hereinafter fully described, and set forthin the claim.
We attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure #1 is device, showin dotted position hair.
Figure #2 is a plan view, showing comb dotted in a forward position, also broken away to show receiving slots in heating unit.
a view of the side of the heating unit and comb in a for receiving the strands of Figure #3 1s a partial view of the heating unit broken awayshowing a vertical section of the receiving slots and a vertical section of comb showing retaining buttons on said comb, all taken on line 33, Figure #2.
Figure on line 44 Figure #2.
Figure #5 is a partial pleted Marcel wave.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
view of a comdevice for producing an edged #4 is an enlarged vertical section.
'The device is shown as comprising of a straight tubular memberl, one end 2 being closed, the other end '3, beingleft open to allow the electric conducting wires 4' to pass into and through to suitable connecting points to the heating coil 5 (see Fig. #4). On the end 31s mounted a circular handle 6 made of suitable non-conductive material.
In the forward part of the tubularportion 1 are the slots 7, the forward end 8 being slightly enlarged, the purpose of which will be described later.
The matrix 9 having a concaved portion 10 and two upwardly extended lips 11 (see Fig.4), hasan opening at 12 through which passes the member 1, same being p1voted at 13, one end of the matrix 9 having upwardly bent tubular portion 14, the portion 15 being straight and parallel with the portion 3 of the tubular member 1, the circular handle '16 is similar in construction and material to the handle 6.
The slidable comb 17 having flat top member 18, on each side'of which is downwardly extended portions 19, the forward portion of the comb 17 having on either side perpendicular pointed teeth 20, on the under side of the top member 18 are rivets 21, having an enlarged head 22. These heads when placed within the circular openings 8 of the slots 7, and pressed downward, and the comb 17 slid backward, as can readily be seen, the comb 17 will be held firmly against the tubular member 1. i
The rear portion of the top member 18 is cut away, leaving only the side members 23, one being slightly longer than the other, each having slots 24 similar to slots 7 the pivot 13 having heads on both sides similar to the enlarged heads 22, and are operated in a,
similar manner within said slots 24 as the enlarged heads 22 are within slots 7; it can be readily seen that the comb can be easily removed from the rest of the iron as desired. On the extreme rear portion of the side members 23, are the thumb knobs, 26, by means of which the comb 17 can be pushed forward and pulled back with the thumb or forefinger on either hand.
The zigzag waves 27 as shown in Figure .5 are produced by the moving forward and backward of the comb 17 on the tubular mem- Am VIRGINIA G. HoRNBncx,
her 1. The edged true points or crests 28 are produced by the meeting of lips 11 of matrix '9 at the inner corners 29 of the comb 17 (see Fig. l).
The method of producing a perfect edged true zigzag Marcel wave, is to place a strand of hair between the member 1 and the matriX 9 (the member 1 first being heated by an electric current passing through the heating coil) then pressing them firmly together, and by moving of the comb forward orbackward, on successive engagements producing the zigzagwave, the. extended lips of the matrix 9 in contact with :the inner corners "of the comb 17 produces the edged true tion and arrangement of the device herein shown and described, inasmuch as the same may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We claim:
A curling iron comprising a heater tube and a clamp member cooperating therewith, there being a channeled member movably associated with the "heater tube thereof, the sides of the said .member embracing the sides of the clamp of the iron, and the sides of said members being ,tormed with teeth.
In witness whereof we hereunto subscribe our names.
n. n DQNDANVILLE, GLADYS DONDANVI-LLE. VIRGINIA e. .HORN'BECK.
