Description

'UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN B. BOLINGER', OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OFY ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CHRISTIAN F. FREY, OF lSAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFESHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,020., dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 28, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BOLINGER, of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State -of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Knife-Sharpeners and Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the fo1- lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved device for sharpening knives, needles, and other edged and pointed implements. It consists of two emery disks, with elastic rings secured to their backs and held in position by metallic rings and a spiral spring, and all so constructed as to be easily taken apart for cleansing, packing in small compass, or for any other desired purpose.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side view, with disks closed together; Fig. 2, a side view, with disks separated; Fig. 3, sectional view of one of the disks and rings, and Fig. 4 is a face view of a disk.
a a are the emery disks. b b are the elastic rings secured on the backs and near the circumference of the disks. c c are metallic rings, made slightly dished, in which the elastic rings are held. d d are arms extending above the top of the metallic rings far enough to permit the free passage of a knife between A the disks. e is a spiral spring having its ends hooked on said arms. It holds the disks together when in use. The metallic rings are provided with the feet f g. The foot f is made rectangular and ts neatly between the boss L and flange t' on the clasp la, and holds the ring c rigidly in position. The foot g is constructed so as to turn on the pivot l. The clasp lo is furnished with a thumb-screw, by which it may be fastened to a table.
The elastic rings permit the drawing of a knife of varying thicknesses between the disks, and hold the latter at all times firmly against the edge. rlhe spring c will permit the turning outward of the ring c, When instruments of greater thickness than the elastic rings Z1 b will yield to are passed between the disks. By unhooking the spring c from one or both the arms d d the several parts of the device may be easily taken apart for cleansing, repairing, packing, or for any desired purpose.
Having described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the disks a a, elastic rings b b, and clasp la, of the metallic rings c c', constructed as described, and spiral spring c, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I attlx my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN B. BOLINGER. Witnesses:
L. J. BAsKINs, C. F. FREY.
