To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LoUIs BARNETT, a citi- New York, has invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hats, of which the following is aspeeification.

This invention rel-ates to improvements in adjustable hats and particularly to hats for ladies wear.

The primary object of the invention resides in'a hat capable of adjustment to differentsize heads, whereby a supply of hats may be kept in stock by a milliner without requiring an assortment,ofsizes to accommodate the trade. The hats may be readily adjusted to the head of the purchaser.

Another object is to provide a hat wherein the adjustment means is concealed so as not to detract from the style of the hat.

A further object is to provide a hat embodying adjustable features and which is simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and easy of adjustment.

With these and other objects in view, the inventionresidesin certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure '1 is a perspective view of my improved hat in adjusted position.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the position of the hat prior to its adjustment.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure '1.

F igure 4 is a detail perspective view of the stiffening band.

Referring more particularly to the draw ing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved hat in its entirety which includes a soft flexible crown 11 having a split band 153 of oucltram or other stiff material encircling the open end and positioned between the fabric of the crown and a lining 13. The lining is split as at 13 intermediate the ends of the split band so that the same will not become wrinkled during the adjustment of the crown 11. A strip of elastic 14 has its ends stitched to the free ends of the split band and tends to normally contract the band so as to fit snugly about the head'of a wearer. 'An upturned brim 15 is carried by the crown and is also split at a point adjacent the ends of the stiffening hand 12, but one of the ends of the brim is extended to provide a flap 16.

In practice wlien'desired to adjust the size of the hat, the flap 16 is brought over the free end of the brim to overlap the same and is secured by stitching or by an ornamental pin 17 to the fabric of the crown.

lVhen the flap is fixed, the band in the hat will be held in a limited adjusted position and the gathered portion of the crown between the ends of the stiffening band will be concealed by said flap. It will therefore be seen that the adjustment feature will not detract from the beauty of the hat but will impart to the same a new style.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a milliner may stock up with a quantity of hats of a particular stylewith out requiring; an assortment of sizes to be kept on hand, and which sometimes proves a loss to millinersas certain sizes are more readily disposed of than others. With this type of hat the same may be adjusted to fit various size heads.

A ladies hat comprising a crown of tlcxible material having split upturned brim fixedly secured to the 0 ion od e thereof one end of said briinbeingextended to provide a flap, a lining within said crown and split adjacent the ends of said brim, a split stiffening band encircling the major portion of said crown and interposed between, the shown and said lining, the ends of; said split. stitleninpband terminating adjacentthe split of said lining" and an elastic strap comiectin gthe ends of said stiffening band to normally cause the periphery of said crown to contract. said flap overlapping the adjacent end of said brim. and removable ornament secured to said flap and crown to hold the crown in an adjusted position against the tension of said elastic strap and to conceal said end.
