UNITED STATES I isiasn Parser orrica.
HENRY B. PATCHE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSZG-NOR TO GENESY ELECTRIC LANTERN 00., OF RAW'LINS, VIYOMING, A CORPORATION OF WYOMING;
nnno'rnrc nnnrnnnl Application filed. May 21,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. Pnrorrn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kansas City, county of Jackson, tate of lvlissouri, have invented a certain new and useful 1 Improvement in Electric Lanterns, of which the following is a. complete specification. 1 a
This invention relates to electric lanterns of that class designed primarily for use by trainmen and switchmen, and the object is to produce an eflicient device of this character having a strong and dependable lamp guard which can be secured in position quickly, and a foldablev handle for convenience in the storage of the lantern;
With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel and useful features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is aside elevation of a lanter embodying the invention;
- Figure 2 is a side elevation of the lower part of the body portion with the guard omitted;
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the guard;
Figure 4: is an enlarged central section of a portion of the handle; and c Figure 5 is a side elevation of the construction shown by Figure i, but with the handle in partly folded condition.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 indicates the body of the lantern, the same being hollow and preferably constructed of two similar oppositely bowed sections provided at their opposite margins with similar outstanding ears 2, and said ears are formed with outwardly bowed portions 3 of semi-cylindrical form, said portions extending divergingly upward and each standing in opposed position to a corresponding por tion to provide cylindrical sockets wherein by cross rivets i are secured the lower members 5 of the handle. The members 5 comprise the lower tubular portions and upwardly extending flat portions, thelatter beingproduced preferably by flattening the upper ends of the tubular portions as shown at 6, and said portions 6 are providedin their outer faces with radial recesses 7, and

between said recesses with bolt holes 8 through which extend bolts 9.
Similar handle sections comprise tubular portions 10 and flat portions 11, the latter being adapted to fit flatly against portions '6, and being provided with protuberances upset or headed as at -to guard against total dislocation of the nuts 1 1.
The handle sections 10 are conn cted by and receive the handle proper, the same consisting of a U-shaped metal core 16 and a fibre or equivalent insulating sheath or cover 17, and said handle proper is secured in the portions '10 by rivets 18. \Vhen the handle stands upright or. in a vertical plane, the
' nuts 14 are'screwed home to clamp the fiat portions 6 and 11 in interlocked relation as shown most clearly by Figure 4c, in which position all the parts of the handle constitute in efiect a single rigid unit so that thelair tern can be manipulated in any way without chance of pivotal action on the bolts 8. Then the lantern is to be placedin agrip for transportation or stored away in the smallest possible space, the nuts 1 1 are unscrewed sufficiently to permit the handle proper with its upper and lower pivoted sections to be swung downward upon the pivot bolts untilarrested by the guard hereinafter referred to. I
The lower end of the body portion lter descent lamp depending from the central portion of the reflector.
The guard hereinbefore referred to, is of skeleton form and constitutes a protection for the lamp and lens and also a base for the support of the lantern when not suspended by the handle, The base ring 26 is arranged concentrically with respect to .1
smaller top band 27, the latter being adapted to fit snugly on the portion 19 of the body against the lower side of the'bead 20, and the base ring and band are connected by braces 28 which are preferablyspot-welded at their low-er ends to the base ring and at their upper ends to the band, and the latter is equipped with a plurality of'screws 29 whereby it is secured firmly to the lower end of the body, said screws performing another function within the body which it is not necessary to describe in this connection, as it forms no part oi this application.
Itis believed that the construction and operation of the device has been set forth sufiicicntly as to make further recapitulation unnecessary. From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character described which possesses all of the features of advantage set forth as desirable, and'wh-ileI have described and claimed the preferredembodiment of the same, Ireeerve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit. and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an electric lantern; a bail comprising an inverted U-shaped portion, clownwardly-converging sections consisting of tubular upper ends receiving and secured to the ends or the inverted U-shaped portion, and flattened lower ends having openings and facial protuberances above and below "with the bolts in clamping the flattened ends of said sections unyieldingly together when the bail is upright,- with i the said protuberances engaging the said recesses respectively. I
2. Inan electric lanterin a'body comprising a pair of vertical semi-cylindricalmenibers fitted together at thcir'edges,each section at a point intermediate its height havin atits opposite edges outwardly projecting vertical ears fitted flatly together the engaging ears having upwardly extending opposite outwardly-bowed portions, means for securing the engagin -ears together,and an arch-shaped handle fitted and rigidly secured at *its ends within the. chambers formed by said bowed'ear portions.
In witness whereof I"hereunt0 aifix my signature.
' P i-IENRYB. PATGHE.
