Description

J. A.. IUTEN.
COLLAPSIBLE COT. APPLICATION man Amma, 1911.
l ,276, 5 3 9 Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
JOHN A. JUTEN, OF GILBERT, MINNESOTA.
COLLAPSIBLE COT To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, .loi-1N A. JUTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilbert,
i in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableJ others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in collapsible cots, and -has for itsprimary object to produce a'cot ot' this character which of comparatively cheap andinexpensive construction, durable and substantial in design, and which can be quickly and readily collapsed into a compact bundle so as to occupy a minimum amount of space.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for locking the cot in extended or set up position.
A still furthenobject of the invention is to construct the cross legs ot the cot of detachable sections so that when thd cot is collapsed, the sections can be disconnected in order to enable the cot to be arranged in a more compact and smaller bundle.
lVith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various noi'el :teatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and set iorth with partic'ularity in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l represents a 'side elevation ot my improved construction of collapsible cot.
Fig. 2 represents an end vieu' ot the cot.
Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the cot collapsed, with the lower sections of the cross legs removed, and
Fig. el represents a side elevation ot one of the lower cross leg sections.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote correspondingr parts throughout the accompanying drawings and the following description.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates a. pair of parallel side members and the numeral 2 indicates a pivotal member coextensive in length with the side members and arranged in a plane belen' and intermediate the side members. The side members are connected Specification of Letters Patent.
yPatented Aug. 20, 1918.
pplication led August 13, 191?. Serial No. 185,933.
through the medium of a canvas Vor other fabric top Each of the parallel side members is constructed of telescopically mounted pipe sections l, 5 and 6. The pivotal member likeun'ise is constructed of a plurality of pipe sections 7, 8 and 9. The side members 1 and the pivotal member 2 have their opposite ends and their intermediate portions sup ported through the medium ot' pairs of cross legs 10.
The legs of each pair ot cross legs each consist ot' an upper section 11 and a lower section 12, the yupper end of the lower section being threaded into the lower end of the upper section for detachable connection therewith. T he lower end of each of the upper sections 11 is provided with a bearing 13 for the reception of the pivotal member 2, while 'the upper end of each upper member is provided With a bearing 14 for the reception of the respective side members.
then the cot has been arranged in set up position, I employ av pair of hooks 15 in connection with cach pair of cross Vlegs to rigidly maintain the same in set up position. The upper ends of these hooks 15 are pivotally connected to the upper leg sections 11, as indicated by the numeral 16, While the loiver hook ends are adapted to engage eyes 17 carried by the lower leg sections 12.
ln order to maintain the cot in extended position against casual telescoping, l provide spring catches 18 for each of the pipe sections S and 9, these spring catches consisting ot' a lealI spring rigidly secured at one end to each of the respective sections 8 and 9, While the opposite end is provided with a lug adapted to engage a corresponding aperture in each of the respective pipe sections 7 and 8 when the sections have been extended. TVhile l have shown one form ot spring catch for holding and maintaining the pipe sections in extended position, l of course. desire it to be understood that any other torni ot spring catch means may be used within the scope of the claims.
I claim 1. collapsible cot comprising a pair of parallel telescopic side members, a fabric top connecting said side members, a pivotal telescopic member arranged in a plane below said side members, pairs of cross legs pivotally mounted on the opposite ends and the intermediate portion of said pivotal member, the upper ends ot said cross legs supportmx 'the ogposta ends, al1-Qi.. the ni-ermeie "por:o tions of said sfle mmf'aes, and means fol locking the telescopic pvotz mlembe' in extended position.
