My invention relates to improvements in lanterns. It relates particularly to electric lanterns which carry a battery to provide current for electric lamp bulbs.
One`of the objects of my invention is to provide anovel handle for a lantern, which can be adjusted to swing freely or to be rigid.
lAnother object of my invention is to provide a novelbase for a lantern, which is cheap, simple, strong, durable and which can be readily attached to a lantern casing.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel lighting mechanism by which one or more lamp bulbs may be independently turned on. My invention provldes further novel bulb supporting means. My invention provides a novel switch mechanism arranged to be reliably releasably locked in the contacting closed position. 1
My invention provides still fur her novel means for shielding the switches rom contact with lthe battery. My invention provides also novel .means for effecting a relialble contact of the switch "members with thev`l` lamp supporting members.
The novel features of my invention are' hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The upper end of the casing 1 is threaded andv has fitted on it .a removable cover 4 which is adapted to bear against the outer side of the upper end of a removable battery 5, which is of the usual type having the metal outer side one of its terminals, and having at its lower end a central terminal 6.
Forsupporting the battery 5 in the casing l and for supporting the lamp bulbs 3, there is provide-d in the casing 1 above the lower opening an annular supporting hori-- zontal member 7 having its periphery fitted in and fastened in 'any suitable manner in and to the casing 1. v
Two plates y8 and 9 of insulating material bear against the upper and lower sides recentral terminals vof the bulbs 3, the otherl terminals of which are in the usual screw threaded form adapted to be, respectively screwed into screw sockets 14 forming parts respectively of two bulb supporting members 15, the upper ends of which are fastened to the insulating plate 9, Fig. 6.

respectively adjacent tobut spacedafrom the bulb supporting members 15 are ,two contact plates 17, which may beelectrically con nected with each other by a ring metal plate 18 to which the rivets 16are connected, and which rests on the upper insulating plate 8.
For returning the current from the bulbs 3, carried thereto by the conductor comprising the rivet 10, plate 12 and pins 13, which are electrodes, there are provided two switch members comprising two vertical vplates of metal, 19, preferably resilient,
slidably mounted on the inner side of the easing 1. The latter has two diametrically opposite vertical slots 2O through which extend rivets 21 to the outer ends of which are fastened two finger hold plates 22. Each plate 19 has at its lower end an inwardly turned portion 23 havingat its inner end an upwardly extending wedge shaped projection 24, Figs. 5 and 7, which is adapted, when the plate 19 is forced upwardly to the closed or contacting position, as shown at the left side in Fig. 5, to wedge between and against the adjacent supporting member 15, and the adjacent contact plate 17.
To prevent the battery 5 from contacting with the plates or switch members 19, suitable shielding means may be employed. As illustrated in the drawings, such shielding means comprises two plates 25 fastened to the inner side of the casing 1, Fig. 8 and Fig. 6, and provided each with a vertical channel 26 through which the adjacent switch plate. 19 extends.
For supporting the lantern on the Hoor or ground, there is provided a base comprising sheet metal ring 27 having an outwardly rolled upper edge28 having vertical notches 29 in which are respectively mounted supporting wires 30, the lower ends of which are coiled around and fastened to a wire horizontal ring 31. The upper portions 32 of the supporting wires 30 are horizontal and arcuate and are fitted in the rolled upper edge 28 of the ring 27. The latter is adapted to receive therein the lower end of the casing 1 to which it is fastened in any suitable manner as by screws 33.
For carrying the lantern, it is provided with a handle 34 having cup shaped ends provided with conical peripheral annular portions 35 respectively fitted on similarly shaped outer portions 36 of two cup shaped members 37 which are fastened to the outer side of the casing 1, diametrically opposite to each other. The portions of the handle and the members 37 between the conical porn tions 35 and 36 are spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 4. Mounted ineach member 37 is a central bolt 38, the hcadof which bears against the inner side of the member 37. A nut, 39 mounted on the bolt 38 bears against the outer side of the handle 34. By tightening the nuts 39, the handle may be rigidly pressed, as'shown, and the left finger plate 7 22 is raised until the wedge shaped projection 24 on vthe adjacent plate 19 engages with its beveled edges the adjacent member 15 and contact plate 17. The current from the battery 5 will then pass from the terminal 6 through the rivet 10, plate 12 and adjacent electrode 13 through the left bulb .3, and thence through the member 15, plate 19, body 1--of the casing, and cover 4 tothe outer side or other terminal of'the battery 5. By raising the other plate 19 to the closed position, the other bulb "3 may be lighted, and the first one cut out by depressing the other plate 19.
For reliably releasably holding the plates 19 in the closed position, there are mounted in the casing 1 in respective alinement with i the plates. 19, two pins 40, having rounded inner ends adapted to respectively enter, two holes 41 provided one in each switch plate 19. The switch plates 19 are resilient so as to spring over the projecting rounded inner ends of the pins40.
The glass of the lens 2 and that of the bulbs V3 maybe clear or tinted in desired colors.

What I claim is .y
1. In a lantern, a casing, a cup shaped supporting member fastened to the outer side thereof and having a conical peripheral portlon at its outer end, a. handle having at one end a conical peripheral portion rotatablyy fitted on' the conical ortion of said member, the handle and sai member being spaced apart between said conical portions, a bolt extending centrally through said spaced apart portions and bolt, said spaced apart portions being substantially parallel and clamped between'the head of the bolt and said nut.
2. A lantern base comprising a sheet` a nut on said.
3. In a lantern, a lantern base comprising a sheet metal ring having a rolled edge and adapted to receive a easing,' a horizontal wire ring, and supporting wires fastened at their lower ends to said wire ring and having each a horizontal arcuate upper portion mounted in said rolled edge.
4. In a lantern, the combination with a casing adapted to contain a battery, of an upper ring slidably and removably fitted on the casing and having a rolled edge, a lower supporting ring, and supporting Wires fastened to said lower ring and having respectively horizontal arcuate portions mounted in said rolled edge.
