The invention relates to portable desk lights, and more particularly to certain 1mniovcmonts in the construction oi? the lamp base for use with such lamps.

An important feature oiithe invention is comprised in a combination oi? parts embodyin a hollow base, a tubular or other form of hollow standard connected with base, and a central. tie rod of U-shapc which is attached to the base at its lower end through'the instrumentality oi a screw and clamping nut at one end, the other end of the U-shaped tie rod being equipped with laterally extending lugs to bear upon a cap piece, and perforated ter minal portions to receive a pivoting member for adiustably supporting the lamp.

The foregoing, and other important teatures of the invention including details of construction and combinations of parts, will be better understood from the following detailed description in connection with the ac-. companying drawings.

The lamp base proper, i, is preferably made of sheet metal, hollow, and at its lower extremity has an inturned edge 5 which isseated in a recess 6 of: a metal base 7. The base 7 is preferably made of solid metal, and

is of sufficient weight to stabilize the lamp,

and maintain it securely upon a flat topped table, or other surface.

The base 7 is provided at its center with a thickened portion, 8 having therethrough a pert-oration 9, which is shown as receiving a screw 12. The upper end of the screw is herein shown as being riveted at 14L through an aperture at the lower, horizontal portion of a U-shaped tie rod 16. This tie rod may be made of sheet metal, of relatively light weight.

The bascfl tapers upwardly to a relatively diminished, circular top portion 17, which is surmounted by a washer 20, having a downturned edge 21, and supported upon the washeris the tubular lamp stem 22, having an open annular cap 24 at its upper end, and a second washer 26, fitting over said cap. The washer 20 is provided with oppositely arranged guiding slits 30-30 which are slipped over the U shaped tie rod 16, and held against turning relatively thereto. The downwardly bent flange 21 of the washer fits tightlyupon an upper annular portion of the base 4, there by stiffeningandstrengthening the top of the base at that point where the U-shape tie rod 16 passes through the base and. washer 20, and the slits 30-30 receive the side members of the tie rod. These features of the washer are quite important as strengthening and centering devices for the tie rod, asthe side members of the rod are held rigidly in fixed positions by the slits and prevented from twisting or bending, whereby the tie rod is stitlencd and supported and greatly increased strength given to the entire lamp standard thereby.

Near the upper end of the arms of the U- shaped tie rod are lugs 28, which are preferably bent out from the metal of the red, as shown, and act as abutments bearing against the upper face of the washer 26. The upper extremities 16 of the rod are .providedwith alined. perforations to receive a hollow pivot stud 31 which connects the ends of the rod with the lamp socket receiving member 35. -A screw 38isthreaded to the interior of the pivot stud 31, and with said stud acts to con? nect the ends of thetie rod pivotally to the lamp. y i y The tie rod may be clamped to the base by the screw 12, whichpasses centrally through the base Tan dis shown as clamped to said base by: anut12. When the several parts are assembledyas shown in thedrawings, the U- shaped tie rod passes centrally through the washer 26, hollow stem 22, washer 20, and upper portion Ofli the lamp base, and upon tightcnin g the nut 12 the several parts are drawn together, and clamped to each other in such manner as to form a rigid structure. Any equivalent clamping means may be used for the screw 12 and nut 12.

The elements constituting the base and standard of the lamp as above described are simple in construction, easy to assemble and disassemble, and 'cconomical to manufacture. When assembled, the construction is durable the combination of a hollow conical base, an annular weighted portion supporting the base and having a central perforation, an aperturedwasher upon said base, a hollow stem supported uponthe washer, a sheet metal U- shapedtie rod extending through said base, washer and stem and having interlocking engagement with said washer, said rod being provided'above the stem with lateral abutments, a washer interposed between the upper end of thehollow stem and said abutments,

In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow base containing a turned fiange'fitting over thecontracted top ofsaid base, :a'hollow' stem supported upon the washer, a, U-shaped tie rod extending through said base and stem and rigidly held by said washer against lateral distortion, and

In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow base having a contracted upper extremity, with an opening therethrough, a washer fitting over said extremity, and provided with spaced slits, a U-shaped tie rod having its lower end anchored in said base, and its side members passing through the slits in said washer, whereby the tie rod is rigidly retained in alineinent with the hollow stem, a hollow stein supported upon said washer and surroundin said tie rod, a second washer at the upper end of said stem provided with an aperture for receiving said tie rod, and means for connecting a lamp with said tie rod.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow conical base, an annular weighted portion supporting the base, and having a central perforation, a washer above the base having spaced slits therein, a hollow stem supported upon the washer, a sheet metal U-shaped tie rod extending through saidbase, the slits in said washer, and the stem, and provided above the stem with lateral abutments, a washer interposed between the upper end of the stem and said abutments, and clamping means for securing the lower portion of the tie rod to the weight arranged to draw the several parts together.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a weight member having a central perforation, a hollow base of conical form supported by said member, a washer having spaced slits arranged to rest upon the top of said base, a hollow stem supported upon said washer, a second washer arranged over the opposite end of'said stem and having an opening therethrough, a U-shaped tie rod extending through said base, the slits in said first named washer, said stem, and said second washer, the tie rod having laterally projecting lugs, engaging said second washer,

and means for tightly securing the several parts together.
