Description

G. EIPUBPLE. COMBINED LAMP GUARD- AND HANDLE;
APPLlCATl0 N FILED MAR 3. 1919.
Patented June 28, 1921 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. PURPLE, OF LA GRANGE, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR T0 FLEXIBLE STEEL LAGING- COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. V
COMBINED LAMP-GUARD AND HANDLE.
Application filed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 280,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. PURPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Grange, in the county of Cook and btate of Illinois, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Combined Lamp-Guards and Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact. description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,'forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a combined lampguard and handle, and, more particularly, to a combined lamp-guard and handle which may beeasilyandrapidly positioned over the electric light bulb and the accompany ing light socket and cord without in any manner whatsoever disturbing the interconnections or removing from their associated positions the cord, socket and lamp.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provisionof a combined lampguard and handle for the purpose of preventing breakage of electric light bulbs, which can be readily positioned over the cord, socket, and associated bulb and firmly and rigidly secured in this position without disturbing in any manner whatsoever the interconnectionbetween the cord, socket, and.
bulb.
.Another object of this invention consists structed in accordance with the teachings of this invention isex'ceedingly useful and can be utilized in a large variety of places where Y the electric light bulbs are exposed to use which may cause breakage. Lamp-guards of this type can be used to great advantage in ,connection 1 with extension cords, with lamps which are used with cords loosely suspended from the fittings or walls and which are thus subject to vibration and might consequently be broken, and in a large variety of other places.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent from the following description and the appended claims.
For the purpose of "llustration, the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a viewfin elevation of the complete structure and illustrates the manner in which the combined lamp-guard and handle is inclosed about the electric light bulb and the accompanying socket and cord with Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119 28; 1921;
out in any way disturbing their interrelated position -Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top of'the l guard looking down from the plane indicated by the line 2-2 in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the I planeindicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow;
Fig. 1 is a section taken on the plane indicated by the line H in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, and shows a cross-section of the handle; and
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the inner sideof the associated handle.
Fig. 6 isa fragmentary view of a por-i tion Of the lamp-guard.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawings comprises, a J
lamp-guard 8 preferably made of expanded any other suitable material, such as wire,
metal but which may, obviously, be made of which will properly protect the bulb and at: the same time readily transmit the light:
rays. The guard 8 comprises a plurality of 1011- gitudinal ribs 9 which are secured at the l top of the guard to semi-circular interlocking disks 10 and 11 and at the bottom of the guard to two other semi-circular disks 12 and 13. The upper semi-circular disks 10 and 11 are pivotally interconnected by means of eyeletssuch-as 14, these eyelets.
serving as a means to receive the inwardlyprojecting ends 15 of a spring hook 16. The hook 16 is used to hang up or suspend the guard and its associated apparatus.
Secured to the upper portion of each of the semi-circular disks 12 and 13 are metallic brackets 17 and 18, respectively, the
bracketsbeing secured to thedisks 12 and 1 13 by any suitable means, preferably by screws such as 19. The brackets 17 and 18, 3
as clearly illustrated in the drawings in Fig. 1, serve as the interconnecting means between the guard 8 which protects the electric light bulb 20,.and the two parts of the I tially inclose the socket 341. The handles 17 and .18, as indicated in the drawings, par
21 and 22 are made of any insulating'material, preferably wood, and are secured to the brackets 17 and 18, respectively, in any suitable manner preferably by screws such as 25. As indicated in Fig. 5 the brackets 17 and 18 are provided with a strengthening rib such as 26.
The handles 21 and 22'are fitted with a semi-circular slot 27 provided with an enlarged portion 28 at the top thereof, said slot serving toreceive and completely inclose' the cord 23. Each section 2l'and 22 of the handle also carries a dowel such as 29 fitted with an aperture 30, said dowels coope 'ating with the apertures to positively position the handle in its proper place. 7 V
The handle-supporting brackets 17 and 18, as hereinbefore stated, are preferably secured to the guard 8 by means of the screws 19 and cooperating nuts such as 31. In order to properly position the bracket 17 and 18, with respect to each other, each of said brackets is provided with a lug 30 and with a recess 30, the lugs 30 and recesses 30 being so positioned that the lug 30 of the bracket 17 will engage the recess 30 of the bracket 18 and vice versa when the parts are in assembled position. Due to this flQXl ble and adjustableinterconnection between the guard 8 and the handle-supporting brackets 18 and 19, it will be apparent that this handle construction mayv be readily adapted to and positioned on the regular lamp-guards now in use not provided with handles, by merely securing handle-supporting brackets such as 17 and 18 thereto by means of screws such as 19 and cooperating nuts 31.
The necessary operation for positioning the combined lamp-guard and handle over an electric light bulb and its associated socket and cord will now be briefly described, as follows: The two longitudinal sections of the guard and handles are first separated from each other so as to be free to swing about the eyelet pivots 14 by unscrewing the screws such as 32 which hold these two partstogether. When these screws have been removed these sections of the combined guard and handle may be readily moved, with respeet to each other, about the pivots 14 and into the position indicated by broken lines in v Fig. 1. In this position the complete apparatus may be readily placed over the combined globe or lamp 20, the socket 24, and the cord 23. The'two longitudinal sections are now brought together over the globe, socket, and cord and then securely clamped in position by means of the screws 32; the entireapparatus being held in position by the clamping ring 33 which is mounted and positively held in position on thesocket 24 because ofthe clamping action exerted by the ring 33 on the said socket on the tightening of the screws 32. 2
standing flanges 34, surrounding heads of the screws 32, so that they will prevent anyone from getting hold of the lower edge In order to make the screws "still of the head of the screw, by means of a pair of pliers. I I
It will thus'be apparent that the guard and handle constructed in accordance with i and efficiently positioned .over a globe, socket,and associated cord without in any way disturbing the interrelationship between the cord, socket andglobe. Heretofore, when it was desired to place a combined guard and handle in position it was necessary ordinarily to disconnect the socket, pull the cord through alongitudinal bore in the handle, and then reconnect thesocket and thereafter place the globe in position, after whichthe two halves of the guard were brought together'over'the globe and locked into position.
The ease and rapidity with which the combined guard and handle can be placed in position, and its ready adaptability for purposes of protection of lamp-globes, to any and all forms of globes and sockets connected to flexible cords,makes the appara tus of this invention an extremely useful and an exceedingly eflicient commercial apparatus.
The handle may be sold separate from the guard, and may be applied to guards which are already in use.
Obviously, the invention is not limited to the specific construction thereof herein illustrated and described,but is capable of many variations, within the spirit and scope of the invention, as set forth in the following claims. I
a I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States:'
