This invention relates to sign frame or sign holder supporting devices, and particularly to those used in supporting or fastening street, highway, or miscellaneous signs.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature that is readily adaptable to various sizes, styles, shapes and constructions of sign post standards.
Another object of the invention is in the pro-- vision ofa device for supporting sign frames that may be readily removed or placed into position on the sign post standard in a positive and secure position.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision ofa sign frame support that may be either threaded on or clamped to a sign post standard.
And a still further object of the invention is in the provision of a device of this nature that will permit the fixing of the sign holder into various desired horizontal angles, such as becomes necessary at street intersections where the streets do not cross at right angles to each other.
These and other objects will become apparent from the following description, and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the improved sign frame and supporting device, with parts shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cap memher, with a portion of the sign frame shown in sectional perspective, the parts being separated.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through another form of the invention.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the parts thereof separated.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a tubular sign post of any construction, and shown to have a cylindrical upper end, on which the cap 6 is clamped. This cap is constructed with a cylindrical body 7 and made of any resilient material, and formed with opposed clamping ears 8 and 9, located on opposite sides thereof, which are perforated to receive clamping bolts 10 and 11, retained in place by means of nuts 12 and 13.
The cylindrical body of the cap is formed with circumferential slots 14 and 15, which extend from the clamping ears 8 and 9, a limited disportions 14' and 15 of the cylindrical body, which carry the ears will be adapted to draw together due to the resilient material, thus when the ears are drawn towards each other the cap will be contracted to close to a clamped position on the upper end of the post 5.
The top or head of the cap is formed with a central opening 16 and with integral lugs 17 and 18 on opposite sides thereof, and which project above the cap. It being obvious that there may be any number of these lugs. These lugs are formed to engage similar radial teeth or lugs 19 formed on the bottom bar 20 of the sign frame 21, which is of rectangular construction, and the upper bar 22 of which is provided with a central opening through which the vertical bolt 23 extends. The lower end of the bolt also extends through the lower bar 20, and through opening 16, and is engaged by a nut 24. The upper end of the bolt may be independent or integral therewith, and ornamental or otherwise, and includes a shoulder 23; this bolt may also be integral with the lower bar 20 of the frame 21.
Due to the different positions of the radial teeth the sign holding frame may be fixed at desired angles, with reference to the sign post standard. The entire structure is detachably clamped to the head of the post standard, thus permitting quick and easy changes or replacements, and ready attachment, with a minimum of skill.
In Figs. 4 and 5, is shown a modified form of the invention, wherein the upper end of the sign post standard 5, is threaded, and the lower end of the screw threaded coupling 25 is coupled thereto. The upper end of the coupling is internally threaded to receive the screw threaded cap 26, which is formed with a central opening 16, in which the lower end of bolt 23 of the sign frame is fitted, and bolted in place by means of the nut 24'. Lower end of bolt 23 is reduced in diameter thereby producing a shoulder which rests on cap 6. The upper end of the cap 26 is formed with radial lugs 17' which are engageable with cooperating lugs of the lower member of the sign frame.
In assembling the device the cap is positioned on the lower end of the frame member in a fixed position by engaging the lugs of the cap with the lugs of the frame. The cap is then bolted vertically to the lower end of the frame member.
In the cap with the clamping ears it is clamped to the post standard, while in the modified form of cap, it is screwed to the post standard.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and efficient device of this nature has been shown and described, but it is not desired to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed, as it is obvious that certain changes in construction and parts may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A means for supporting a sign holding frame, consisting of a post, a cap mounted on the upper end of the post and provided with a cylindrical wall having slots in opposed pairs on each side thereof extending circumferentially of the wall to provide contractible wall portions, each of said wall portions having an external ear, the ears being arranged in pairs on the opposite sides of the cap, said wall portions having vertical slots between each pair of ears, means for clamping the ears to each other, the cap being also formed with lugs arranged on the upper end thereof, a sign holding frame having radiallugs to cooperate with the lugs of the cap, a bolt extending through the sign holding frame and the cap, and a nut threaded 0n the bolt against the cap to hold the sign holding frame against turning movement on the cap or displacement therefrom.
2. In a street sign device, a cylindrical post, a cylindrical cap fitting over the upper end of the post, said cap having a top wall resting on the post, the side wall of the cap having a peripheral slot, clamping ears projecting from said side wall, a vertical slot communicating with and below said peripheral slot and between said clamping ears, a pair of lugs on the top wall arranged on a diameter and on opposite sides of the center thereof, a sign frame having a bottom bar, and a plurality of radial teeth projecting from the bottom bar, said teeth being adapted to engage said lugs to enable the frame to be held in various positions of angular adjustment.
3. In a street sign device, a post, a cap fitted over the upper end of the post, said cap having a top wall provided with a pair of lugs diametrically arranged on opposite sides of the center thereof, a sign frame having a bottom bar, and a plurality of radial teeth projecting from the bottom bar, said teeth being adapted to engage said lugs to enable the frame to be held in various positions of angular adjustment.
4. In a street sign device, a cylindrical post, a cylindrical cap fitting over the upper end of the post, said cap having peripheral slots in opposite sides thereof to provide contractible wall portions, each of said wall portions having projecting ears, said wall portions having vertical slots communicating with and below said peripheral slots and between adjacent ears, means for clamping the ears to each other, a street sign frame and means for adjustably attaching the frame to the cap.
