Be it known that we, ALFRED STELL, Jot-1N STELL, and HENRY VVnLoH, subjects of the King of Great Britain,,.and residents, respectively, of The VVhins, Ingrow, Keighley, in the county ofYork, England, Browfield, Keighley, aforesaid, and 25 Rylstone Street,
Keighley, aforesaid, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dotfing.
Mechanism for Cap Spinning, Doubling, Twisting, and like Machines, of which the following description, having reference to the accompanying sheets of drawings, is a specification.
Our invention relates toapparatus and method whereby the process known as dotting is carried out in connection with cap spinning, twisting, doubling and like machines, and our present invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices whereby, with the employment of comparatively few parts of simple construction and arrangement, we are enabled to effect orcarry out the doiiing operations effectively and with the greatest precision so that it is impossible for any of the bol bins (either empty or full) to be misplaced, while thethreads which extend frein the full bobbins removed from the spindles are laid hold of and secured in such relative positions to the empty bobbins upon the spindles that said threads are severed. and wound upon said empty bobbins at the commencement of the spinning operations with greater certainty than heretofore. v

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of suliicient of a cap spinning frame to show the application thereto or our improved devices.
Fig. 2 is a plan drawn to an enlarged scale of receptacles each of which is for engaging with the full and empty bobbins as is hereinafter described.

Fig. 4 is an elevation showing an empty bobbin mounted upon its driving tool with devices for engaging the loose thread in position relatively to the wharle or driving shown by pulley; this figure is drawn to a reduced scale as compared with Figures 2 and 8 but to a lar 'er scale as compared with the other figures.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the parts shown by Fig. l and shows the several devices in position during the spinning operations and with the bobbins having the desired quantity of yarn wound thereon.
Fig. 6 illustrates certain of the parts shown by Fig. 5 adjusted in other posit-ions to carry out the functions hereinafter described.
Fig. 7 is a similar view to Fig. 6 but illustrates the parts in other positions where they have carried out the next stage of the dotling progress.

fn carrying our invention into effect we make use of the devices 2 for laying hold 16 which raises and lowers the tubes 12 upon which the bobbins 19; are mounted.
In conjunction with the mechanism above described we now make use of appropriate receptacles 18, 18 which are mounted upon rails 19, 19. These receptacles are made in halves asillustrated by Figs. 2 and one half 18 being mounted upon the rail 19 the other half 18" being mounted upon the'rail 19 so that the two halves 18, 18 may be made to approach each other as shown by Figs. 2 and 3 or they may be separated by the rail 19 being slid longitudinally over the rail 19.
The rail 19 is mounted upon racks 20 which of the caps 3 and removing said caps-from are operated by pinions 21 and supported by bearings 22 so that by the attendant operating the handle 23 the racks may be raised and lowered to carry with them the two rails 19, 19 and therefore the receptacles 1S, 1S" each pair of receptacles 18, 18 having its respective spindle at as is shown by Fig. 1.
The bearings 21 which are fixed to the upper ends of the racks 20 have other racks 25 mounted upon them so that by a handle 26 and pinion 27 the attendant may cause the rails 15), 1S) and the: receptacles which they carry to advance towards or recede from the spindle :t.
The rail .19 is operated or slid longitudinally over the rail 19 by means of a handle 28 which is pivoted at Z) upon the rail 19 while its outer forked end engages with a stud or pin fixed to the rail 19, thus one portion 18 of each receptacle may be moved laterally from the other portion 18'by the supporting bar 19 being slid as operated by the handle Although we preferably make use of this arrangement it is perfectly obvious-that we may pivot the portion 18 of the receptacle upon the bar 19 and use the bar 19 merely as means'ror oscil lating such pivoted part 18 to cause it to advance towards the part 1801' recede therefrom as occasion may require.
The part 18 of each receptacle has its inner surface 0 (see Fig. 2) smooth and straight throughout while the other part 18 which is fixed upon the sliding rail 19" is of similar contour but has at its lower edge an inwardly projecting'tlange (Z that is arranged to take beneath the flange of the full bobbin or the empty bobbin, as the case may be, when same is placed therein as is hereinafter explained.
The bearings 24: which are mounted upon the racks 20 have extending from them bearings 30 upon which is pivoted ahorizontal shaft 31 upon which are lined arms 32. Upon the outer ends of these arms 32 is pivoted a shaft 33 preferably square in cross section, from which extend pins 31 (see Fig. *1) so that theattendant may be laying hold of one or other of the arms 32 cause same to move from one position shown in Fig. 5 about the centre of oscillation out the shaft- 31 into the position shown by Fig. 1, in this position the arms 32 will have brought the. square shaft intoposition relatively to the wharle 13 as shown by Fig. l In this position the thread u. from the full bobbin on the spindle l; will extend in the direction shown by said Fig. 1.
Prior to advancing the square shaft; 33 into the position shown by Fig. 1 the attendant will have brought it so that its project-ions 3% will bein vertical position where they lie crosswise the paths in which a series of threads '10 are situated so that by said attendant then sliding the shaft 2 longitudinally through its bearings on t e ends of the arms 32, the rnojections 31 carried by said shaft 33 will have come into contact with the threads 7 under such contions that the upper ends of the pegs 231 will fall on one side of said threads '11 while the bases of said pegs will remain on the other side of said threads, thus by the attendant then rotating the shaft 3 through about a quarter of a revolution to bring into the position shown by Fig. l-, each thread 20 will be caused to partly encircle its respective pin 31- so that the attendant may then move the square shaft 3?,- into the posi tion shown by Fig. 1. hen the shai't 33 is thus moved it brings the threads 7/: against the edges of the upper flanges on the wharles 13 and while they are in position on the wharles 1 being started into motion, notches in the flanges ol said wharles will engage the threads 1 and will cause same to rap around the tubes 12. As the threads w at such time are held (011 account of being twisted around the shaft 33 and partly around the pegs 31) they are thereby severed and wound on to the bobbins 12 as desired thus the spinning operations may be continued.
The actions of the several parts hereinbefore described are carried out as follows On the winding operations of the machine being completed and the coils of yarn wound upon the bobbins to produce the hill bobbins, the attendant will arrest the motion 01' the machine. Said attendant will then raise the spindles 4:, their full bobbin; and the caps 3 so that same are brought into the position shown by Fig. 5 where the attendant may then cause the bifurcated cap holders 2 to advance by the actuating handle 5 in known manner so that on advancing said cap holders 2 will lay hold of the upper ends of the caps as shown by Fig. 7.
The spindles l and their full bobbins will then be lowered to their lowest positions and the caps will be caused to recedeto their rear positions so that the holders 18, 18 may be raised in order to lift the empty bobbins 12 sniliciently high that they may be then moved laterally to place said empty bobbins on to the spindles and above the full bobbins on said spindles. The attendant will then open the holders and lower same so that; the flanges (Z on the parts 18 will be below the bases of the full bobbins. *le then closes said holders to bring said flanges (Z beneath the bases oi said full bobbins. The caps are then advanced into alignment with the spindles -L and these spindles 3 are raised so that their upper ends will enter the caps for a short space, on which the attendant operates the holders 18, 18 and raises both the full bobbins and the empty bobbins to the extent that said empty bobbins are carried into the caps.
When the attendant has thus raised the empty bobbins into the caps he will oscillate the bifurcated holders. 4% about their shaft l5 so that they are brought with their bifurcations beneath the bases of the empty bobbins within the caps as is shown by F ig. 7. The spindles are then lowered so that their upper ends are brought below and clear of the lower ends of the empty bobbins which are still retained within the caps. The caps and the empty bobbins are then carried to their rear positions. The bobbin holders 18, 18* are then raised Q-Ilfl moved laterally so that the full bobbins are brought away from and clear of the spindles.
The caps and the empty bobbins are then brought into alignment with the spindles,
on which these spindles are raised and caused to enter the caps in doing so passing between the bifurcations 44-, through the empty bobbins within the caps '23 and suficiently highto enter the upper ends of said caps which will then'be retained in position by said spindles. The bifurcations 4A and the devices 2 are then caused to recede so that the spindles their empty bobbins and the caps may be lowered into the proper positions for the spinning operations to commence. v
On the spindles reaching this their operating position, the attendant, by actuating the handle 26, will bring the square bar 33 into the position relatively to the wharles 13 and the threads w as is hereinbefore described so that by manipulating said square bar 33 as is hereinbefore explained on the machine being started into motion all threads are severed and their loose ends are wound upon the bobbins while all the other parts have been brought into their normal operating positions.
Such being the nature and object of our said invention what we claim is l. The method of doliing for cap spinning, doubling, twisting and like machines, consisting of first removing the caps from the spindles, placing empty bobbins on the spindles above the full bobbins, returning said caps to receive the spindles and empty bobbins and then moving said empty bobbins into said caps.
2. The method of dofiing for cap spinning, doubling, twisting and like machines, consisting of first raising the spindles with the full bobbins, laying hold of the caps, lowering said spindles and full bobbins, causing said caps to recede, after which empty bobbins are placed on the spindles above the full bobbins and moved into said caps where they are retained, then lowering said spindles for the removal of the fullinto and out of the same, means forposition- I ing an empty bobbin on said spindle above a full bobbin thereon, means for moving said spindle with the full and empty bobbins thereon to deposit the empty bobbin in said cap mechanism and for subsequently removing the spindle with the full bobbin therefrom to permit removal of the full bobbin from the spindle. 4. A dotting mechanism for cap spinning machines and the like comprising a cap mechanism, a spindle longitudinally movable into and out of the same, means for moving said spindle with a full bobbin out of said cap mechanism, a holding device for placing an empty bobbin 011 said spindle above said full bobbin, said means being operable to move said spindle and empty bobbin into said cap mechanism, and for removing the spindle therefrom, and said holding device being operable to remove the full bobbin from said spindle.
5. A dotting mechanism for cap spinning machine and the like comprising a cap, a cap operating mechanism to cause recession thereof, a longitudinally movable and rotatable spindle movable into and out of said cap, and adapted to remove a full bobbin therefrom, and to place an empty bobbin therein, a holding device adapted to position an empty bobbin upon said spindle and to remove a full bobbin therefrom, when said spindle is removed from said cap, and said cap mechanism being adapted to temporarily retain the empty bobbin within the cap while the full bobbin is being removed from the spindle.
6. In a dotting mechanism for cap spinning machines and the like, the combination with means for substituting empty bobbins for full bobbins, of thread severing means adapted to twist the threads and to break and engage them with the empty bob bins to cause them to be wound thereon.
7. In a dofiing mechanism for cap spinning machines and the like, the combination with means for substituting empty bobbins for full bobbins, of a shaft having thread engaging elements and being capable v of oscillation, and being moved longitudinally to wind the thread on the thread en gaging elements and to engage the thread with the empty bobbins.
8. In a dofiing mechanism for cap spinning machines and the like, the combina-- tion with means for substituting empty bobbins for full bobbins, of a shaft capable of Iii oscillation and reciprocation, pins projecting from the shaft and being adapted to engage with the threads to sever the same and engage them with empty bobbins.
