A. J. SMITH AUTO RKDIATQR COVER Filed April 9 1925 I Patented Ma .'30,'1926.
UNITED STATES ARTHUR J. SMITH, or HAz EToN, PE N YLVAN A] AUTO RADIATOR covert. V
e a v 7 Application filed April 9, .1925. Seria1No.21,918;
T all whom it may concern;
Be it known that'l, ARTHUR SMITH,
"a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of. Luzerne' and State have inventeda new and of Pennsylvania,
of which; the
useful Auto Radiator Cover, followingis a specification. 1
This invention relates toradiator protectors to be used in connection with the radiators of motor vehicles.
The primary to provide a protector including a curtain which may be adjusted to various heights with respect to the radiator so that the volume of air drawn throughthe radiator by the usual fan may be varied to meet various changes of weather conditions.
Another important object of the invention is to provide means for holding the curtain taut at all times to insure against'the same flapping against the radiator, while in use.
Astill further object of the invention is the provision of adjustablebrackets, where-,.
by the device'may be used in connection with radiators of various sizes. j
With the foregoing andother' objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the'combination. andarrangment of parts and ingthe details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it 'being, understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of'the invention. Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrat-- ing a radiator curtain constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a radiator equipped with a curtain constructed in accordance with the invention, the radiator being partly broken away.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a perspective View of the movable section of the fastening member.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a radiato-r'of a motor vehicle, the samefbein'g'of the usual construction and embodying the usual radiator shell .6.
The device includes a pair of arms indicated at 7 which have integral hook members 8 formed at their' inner ends, which object of the invention is may be made bers 20 which are hook membersareadapted to be positioned around the inner edge of the radiator shell 6, in a manner as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing.
Formed in each arni 7 is an elongated opening 9, the openings 9 being designed toaccommodatethe rod 10, which connects nuts 11 being provided on the endsof'therod 10' to hold the arms 71in the arms 7,
proper spaced relation with each other and eliminate any'possibility of rattling .ofthe arms 7, due to vibrations of the engine.
Positioned on the rod 10 are depending arms 12 which arms are provided .With
spaced openings 18 that accommodate the shaft 14 of the roll 15 on which the curtain 16, is wound. It is to be understood that the roll 15, is of the spring roll type so. that as the curtain 16 is unwound from. the roll 15, the curtain will be placed under tension to the end that when the curtain is released, 7 i it will automatically wind on its roll; v 7
Set screws 17 extend through the upper ends of the arms '12 and engage the rod 10 to the end that the arm's12 may be adjusted longitudinally of the rod 10 so that rolls of various lengths may be positioned be-'- tween the arms, the set screws acting to hold the arms in the r positions of adjust- -ment.
The keeper forming a part of the invention embodies'an'elongated bar 18 which is adapted to be'supported'by the radiator, bolts 19 being provided and extended .through the bar at various positions throughout the length of the bar 18, the
bolts passing through the spaces between the coils. of the radiator as clearly shown byFigure 2 of the drawing. Thus it will be seen that due to this-construction, the
bar 18 may be readily and easily secured or removed from the radiator.
. Stamped from the bar 18 are hook memarranged throughout the length of the bar 18 and disposed in spaced relation with each other to be engaged by the securing member 21 carried by the curtain. The securlng member 21 is disposed intermediate the ends of the rod 22 p which is positioned in a suitable :pocket end of the curtain 16 formed at the upper throughout its width to brace the cover and prevent wrinkling thereof whilein use From the foregoing'it willv be obvious that should it be desired to expose the upper portion of the radiator the member 21' Lil ed With the first mentioned' I v means forsecurmg may at be pestioned 1 over a hook member '20 in such ,a Way as'to hold thetuppersendeof the curtain at a point as shown by Eignre 1 of the drawing. In Warm Weather-should it be desired to'admit airto the entire'radiator surface, the curtain so that the member 21 Will lie over theho ok member at the base of;the bar :18.
' To facilitate the use of the curtain 16, a finger piece 23 is proridedsoztlratetthmopen ator' may aeadily operate the :curtain :to position it over the ahOOli -members 20 or remove it therefrom.
