MERCHANDISE-DISPLAY BOX. Y
Application and xuneza'iezi; Serial Nb. 722,001.
To all whom it may concern."
' 'Be itknown that L-VVALTER ZARnxo, a
citizen" of the UnitedStates, anda resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have in-..
vented certain'newand useful Improvements in Merchandise-Dis1: lay Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to boxes in which merchandise maybe packedfor storage or shipment and which may be placed one.
counter or the like in a store for the display and sale of the merchandise contained there- 'tended surfaces on which advertising-matter maybe adequately displayed.
In accordance with my mention I preferably form "the entire box, both body'portion I and cover portion, from one integral flat blank cut from a sheet of paper, board or the like, and I specially construct the cover portion of the box with two transversesections,
so that the front section may be turned upwardly to exposea portion of the contents of the box and display an advertisement, and wlth side wings-extending substantiallythe full length of the'cover and carried" by the front cover section only, said side wings .a flat sheet of paper,
when'the front cover section is turned upwardly, being adapted to stand vertically atthe side-edges thereof and at the sides of the open box and preferably to rest at their lower ends on the counter orthe like on which the box' may be supported; The up-turned front' cover section and the side wings carried thereby afiord three panels for the display of advertising matter, and said wingslnay'be turned outwardly in thrections from each-other, so that they may stand on forwardly diverging-lines for the better display of-such reading matter as may be thereon. The said side wings,in the open by engaging the counter position of the box, supporting the box, serve to steady the box and prevent the same from-being accidently tilted over.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being-had. tothe acp "prises a rectangular central panel 25- extending from the-forward weakened line 26 to the'aforesaid fold 1ine22,
companying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan viewof theblank, cut from boardor the like, from Thepurpose of my invention'is to provide an easily constructed and durable-box of the characterreferred to, which shall possess f in connection with the cover of the box, ex
Fig. 2-is a perspective view of the l ig. 3 1s a central. vertical longitudinal shown in its open position;
Fig. 4- is a central verticallongitudinal section'of the shown in its initial closed Position;

which blank the box of my invention is "formed; display box of iny-invention shown in "open display'positionp V is a vertical transverse section through the same,"taken onthe dotted line 55 of Figfl, and i 1 Fig. 6 is a front end View of the box" shown in initial closed position.
In the drawings, 10 designates the blankv from which the box is to be "formed, and
this blank 'co1nprises-;fa section 11 for. the body orholding portion of the box anda section 12 for the cover portions of the box.
The-section ll has a rectangular panel 13 whichfinallyconstitutes thebotto'm of thethis panel 13 is definedat oppositebox, and sides by by fold lines of. the box, is integral at its side edges, at the aforesaid fold lines 14, with side sections ormembers 16, 16which finally constitute the'sides of the-body portion'lof the box. At its outer end the panel 131,is at the outer fold line 15, integral with the fold lines 1 1, 14; and at its ends 15, 15. Thepanellifl, 'orbottomf front end section 8 which provides the front end of'tlie box, and this section 8' is con' nected, at the fold lines 17, with end- flaps 18, 18 which,'in the finished' box,- are secured by glue orIotherwise to tne nner surfaces of the sides 16, 16, as SllQWlllIl land 3.
The front end v.finernber. 8 is preferably formed with'a slot 19 to receive a detachable tongue 20. provided on the front end of at the inner fold line'll'),
t the cover section for locking the box. in closed position, as shown in Figs. &; and 3, 1 At its inner end the panel or bottom section 13 is integral,
with an outer or rear end section 21, which Q is joined with the cover section Eat a fold 1 line 22 and at-its ends is connected, ,at'
the fold lines s3, with flap sections 2%,
which in the finished box are folded for wardiy. and secured, by .glue or otherwise,
against 'the inner sides of the side 1nen1- bers 16, as shownin Figs. 2 and 3.
"The cover section 12 of the blank 10 comandthis'panel v 25 has a transverse fold line 27 which divides the cover into a front section 9 and a rear section, which I number 28, said front section 9 and said rear section 28 in the finished box being adapted to extend from the rear end to the front end of the body portion of said box and from oneside member 16 of the box to the other side member 16 thereof, thus wholly covering the body portion of the box. The panel of the cover section has at its longitudinal edges, side Wings 29 which join the -front member 9 of the panel 25 at the fold lines 30, which extend inwardly to the fold line 27. The wings 29 are, along'the side edges of the rear section 28 of the cover,.'separated from said section by slits 81. The wings 29 correspond with each other, and in the completed box are adaptedto lie against the inner surfaces of the side members 16 thereof, as shown in Figs. o andib', and in the open position ofsaid box, shown in Figs. land 2, said wings 29 are adapted-at their then lower ends to rest upogn a counter or shelf upon which the box may bev placed,
said wings then extending vertically at the outer side of. the side members 16 of the body of'the box. a
The ma iner of forming the box from the blank 10 will be understood Without extended explanation. The .body portion of the box is formedby bending the side members 16 upwardly on the fold lines .14 and the end members 8, 21 upwardly on the fold lines 15, and thereupon the front end flaps 18 are folded rearwardly on the fold lines 1'7 and the rear endflaps 2d are folded for wardly on the foldlines 23, and said flaps are secured to the inner-surfaces of the side members 16, as shown, thus completing the body portion of the box.
lVith respect to the cover portions of the blank 10, the side wings 29 are folded in wardly toward each other and at right angles to the main cover paned 25, on the fold-lines and the whole cover section is folded forwardly on the fold line 22.
In closing the box, the side, wings 29 pass downwardly into the body portion of the box and lie against the inner surfaces of the sides 16 thereof, while the main panel 25 formed of the sections9, 28 cover over the entire body of the box. The tongue 20 is then folded downwardlyon the line 26 and inserted into the front slot'19, for locking the box in closed condition. 1
When the box is to belopened for display purposes and the sale of merchandise therefrom, the cover is turned upwardly on the fold line 22, the tongue 20being withdrawn from the slot 19 and detached on the weal;-
ened line 26. The i side wings 29 having been withdrawn from the body of the box,
are then flared outwardly from, each other and the front section 9 of the cover is turned vertically on fold line 27 and; the wings ly open position, as shown, and act as legsto maintain the cover section 9 in firinvertical position, with itsv then lower edge elevated slightly fronr-thebody of the boxand the merchandise therein, thereby. affording an eflicient exposure of the merchandise and facilitating the withdrawal of the.-, sa 1ne from-thebox. The wings-v29gwfillbe about the same in width as the height of the sides 16, andhence said wings not only provide adequate surfaces to receirfe adve'rtisingmatter but long edges to engagethe counteror shelf supporting the box and obviate danger of. the box being llted or knocked over by careless. handling. thereof. 7
In closing the box I preferably insert the wings 29 into the body of the box and along thesides 16 thereof, but if the box when filled is closely wrapped in or banded by paper the Wings 29011 the closing of the box may be allowed to. lie at, the outer side'of the sides 16. p v
The boxes will vary in size or dimensions in accordance with the nature of the merchandise to be placed within the same.
I have shown and describedthe most desirable embodiment of my invention known to me, but I am aware that the details of form and construction. may be modified in some particulars without departure fromthe spirit of my invention and within the scope: I
of the appended claims. v
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by. Letters-Patent, is Q I '1. A merchandise display box of the character described, comprising a body portion having a. bottom, sides and ends, and a cover portion hinged at its rear endto the rear end of said body portion and comprising a main section adapted to cover said body portion and-side w ngs at the side edges of said main section and carried there- .by, said, main section beingdivided by a transverse fold line into a major frontdisplay portion and a rear section and said wings being joined to said majorportion and free of said rear section, andsaidfrear sec- .tionof the coverportion extending forwardly over the bodyportionand positioning said fold line between the'ends of the body portion when the-boxisj-used and whennot used for. display, whereby saidmajor portion may be turned vertically upwards on said fold line into display position with the wings and extendabove the body'portion between the ends thereof.
2. A merchandise display box as claimed in claim 1, in which said wings are of such length that when 'indisplay position they extend downwardly at the outer sides of the sides of said body portion.
