Description

June 942'. J. 9. MAGLEY' 4 2,285,731
CONTAINER.
Filed May 18', 1940 IN). IH"""-" Patented June 9, 1942 UNETED Ta PATENT OFFICE 2,285,731 CONTAINER John S. Magley, Miami, Fla. Application May 18, 1940, Serial No. 336,030
3 Claims.
This invention relates to containers; and more particularly, to containers of that class which are assembled by folding up from a blank.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a container folded up from a blank to resemble as closely as possible the conventional slat shipping crate used for citrus fruit and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a container having means to bow the top of the container, and means to hold down the ends of the top to fasten the lid, the closed container simulating the appearance of a packed citrus fruit shipping crate.
A further object of the invention is to provide inserts to separate the container into compartments, the inserts having wings to position them relative to the outer portion of the container, the wings conforming to the sides of the container having slots which register with solts in the side panels, the portions of the panels between the slots creating an impression of slats.
It is also contemplated to employ a non-resilient but readily bendable element to aid in maintaining the top in fixed position when the container is closed.
Other objects will become apparent as the following detailed description proceeds, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a container embodying the concepts of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section through the container, taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1; v
Figure 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through one end of the container;
Figure 5 is a view of the blank from which the container is formed; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of an insert.
Although the container of the present invention is designed primarily as a novelty package for candy or the like, it obviously may be used for other purposes.
The container is formed by folding up a blank, such as is shown in Figure 5, having a bottom panel iii, side panels I! and i2. top panel l3, and the panels l4, l5, and it, which when folded form the ends H and 58 of the container, Score lines demark the boundaries of the various panels and facilitate formation of the container.
In assembling the container, the side panels II and I2 and the end panels l5 are bent upwardly along their respective lines of juncture with the bottom panel In. The panels l6, connected to the front side panel, are bent rearwardly over the panels [5, and the panels H extending from the rear side panel II are bent forwardly. Each of the panels M is provided with a tongue l9 adapted to pass through slots 2% in panels Hi to lock the container in assembled position.
Inserts 2| are placed within the container to divide it into compartments. Two of these inserts are employed in the embodiment shown on the drawing. The inserts are U shaped, and are placed in the container back to back, the closed portion of the U forming a transverse partition within the container, Extending from the partitions 22 of the inserts are wings 24, bent at right angles to the section 22, and which extend along the sides of the container, the ends 25 of the wings bearing against the ends I! and I8 of the container. These wings serve to hold the inserts in position relative to the container. The side panels II and I2 are provided with slots 26, 21 and 28, separated :by bridge pieces 29, the slots dividing the side panels into narrow strips simulating the appearance of slats. To further carry out this idea, and also to make the contents of the container visible, the wings 24 of the inserts are provided with corresponding slots 30 which register with the slots in the sides of the container.
The section 22 of at least one of the inserts is higher than the sides of the container, and forms a support for the center of the top panel when the top is closed. Extending from each of the end flaps M are narrow flaps 3| adapted to be bent over the ends of the top panel when the top is closed to hold the ends of the top down on the plane of the top of the sides. Due to this construction, the top of the container will be bowed upwardly giving the appearance of a packed citrus shipping crate.
To ensure the top being held in closed position, strips 32 of non-resilient but readily bendable material, such as tin, are fixed to the flaps M and 3!, extending across the line of fold between the two flaps. Thus, when flaps 3| are bent over the top l3, strips 32 will also be bent and Will hold to this position preventing the flaps from straightening up under the upward pressure of the top.
After the container has been assembled and filled and the top closed, the entire package may be wrapped in Cellophane to protect the contents from dirt or other foreign matter until it reaches the consumer.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, the invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What I-claim is:
1. In a container folded from a blank having side, bottom and end panels, said side panels having sight openings therein, a top panel, inserts to separate the container into .compartments, at least one of said inserts being higher than the sides, one of said side panels having an opening extending along its line of juncture at the top panel to permit a portion of the top panel to rest on the top of the extended insert, positioning wings extending from said inserts, said wings having openings registering with the openings in the side panels, and flaps extending from the end panels adapted to be folded over and hold down the ends of the top panel in the plane of the top of the sides.
2. In a container folded from a blank having side, bottom and end panels, a top panel extending from one side panel, inserts to separate the container into compartments, at least one of said inserts being higher than the sides, one of said side panels having an opening extending along its line of juncture with the top panel to permit a portion of the top panel to rest on the top of the extended insert, and means to hold down the ends of said top panel in the plane of the top of the sides.
3. In a container folded from a blank having side, bottom and end panels, a top panel extending from one side panel, inserts to separate the container into compartments, at least one of said inserts being higher than the sides, one of said side panels having an opening extending along its line of juncture With the top panel to permit a portion of the top panel to rest on the top of the extended insert, and means to hold down the ends of said top panel.
