IMPROVEMENT IN PLOW-POINTS.

Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 157,790, dated December 15, 1874; application filed November 13, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LUTHER H. CALVIN and JOHN WALLACE, of Melburn, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Points; and we do hereby de clare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature oi' our invention consists in a sleeve or socket made of sheet-steel, in such a form as to fit over the point of a plow, and extend along the share of the plow for a snit-- able distance, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a plan view of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, the metal from which the point is made. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation, and Fig. 4 a transverse section on line t t of Fig. 1.

It is well known that the point is the. part of a plow that most quickly wears out, and requires either sharpening or replacing. For this purpose plow-points have been made to suit the different kinds of plows, so that when one is worn out it may be removed and another substituted. This is quite a heavy item of expense, asa number of points will get worn out in a single seasons plowing; and, besides, the substitution of new plow'points only partially remedies the wear and tear of the plow, for the reason that the share also gets more or less worn.

To obviate this difculty, and to lessen the expense to farmers, are the objects of our invention; and to this end we cut a piece of sheet-steel in such a form that, when bent over double, it will form a sleeve or socket, A, with a double wing, B, extending from the inner side. The edges of the doubled sheet-steel are welded together along the line a b d e, and

made into cutting-edges. The sleeve or socket A is made of suitable form to slip over the point of the plow for which it is intended, and the wing B to t over the edge of the plowshare. The wing B forms a protection for the under side of the share, as well as for the upper.

When a plow-point becomes too much worn, the sleeve or socket A is simply slipped over the old point. No fastening is required, as all the strain has a tendency to draw it tighter upon the point. This device can be manufactured very cheap, and is durable and not liable to get out of order.

We are aware that a V-shape cutting-edge has been shrunk upon the share; butin this device the edge is not easily removed, and must be sent to a smiths shop to be attached. Ve are also aware that slip-points, made of sheet-steel, have been used, with a cuttingedge upon the upper edge of the share, fastenedby bolts or lugs. In these devices the bottom of the share is not protected.

We lay no claim to any of the above-named devices; but,

Having thus fully described our invention, what we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

section, with edges a b d e, and formed of a single piece of sheet-steel,bent and welded as described, forming a plow-point and a wearingsurface for both thev upper and lower portions of the share, and secured in position without bolts or lugs, as and for, the purpose set forth.
