lMPRovEMEN'T IN PLowsHAREs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,854, dated December 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BARN'ARD HARVEY, of West Bloomfleld,in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have inven tedcertain new and useful Improvementsin Detachable Cutting Attachment for P1owshares,of which th following is a specification:
The object of my invention is an attachment for use in connection with plowshares whereby the land-side and point are rendered much more durable and efficient, and prevent- V- ed from undue wear, than those devices in general use. My invention consists of a plate, of steel or other tempered material, forged or struck up to a V-shape to form a V-shaped socket, which plate is fitted to the edge of the landside of the plow, heated and driven thereon, and allowed to cool, thus shrinking and firmly clasping the edge of the share, and forming a supplemental cutting-edge.
A represents the improved attachment,
. which consists of a plate, of steel or other tem- -pered material, brought to a V-shapeto form a V-shaped recess, and one edge being formed with a socket, E, which encircles the end of the plowshare B, the said recessed plate being adapted to the edge of the share, as shown, in the following manner: The plate is itted to the edge of the plowshare, is heated and driven onto the same, and permitted to cool, thus shrinking and clasping the share, and being retained thereon in a irm position, forming, as it were, a part of the share, which is not liable to be removed by sudden shocks. I construct the steel point C of a plate of steel, doubled over and welded at the edges, and at one end forming a hollow` sheath, sharp at one end and hollow at the other. This point is fitted to the end of the share, when it is heated and driven onto the same, and permitted to cool,
thereby shrinking and clasping the share, and being retained in a iirm position.
By providing the share with the supplemental cutting-edge A, as described, and coinbining therewith a steel point, G, the entire cutting and wearing portion ofthe plow is protected, and will be much more durable and manner herein shown, for the purpose speci-- fled. n In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of September, 1872.
