Be it known that 1, ROBERT C. Donne, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have i nvented a new and. useful Improvement in a Shipping Cont; her and Display Device, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to containers for use in shipping, displaying and storing water plants and plants of the variety requiring a constant supply of water.

An object of my invention isto provide a container that is adaptable for use in shipping water plants.

Another object is to provide containers of this type, a number of which may be 'ured together, to form a simple unit for ing and shipping. v

These and other obj cts are attained by the means described herein and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which;

Fig. 1 is a persp .ctive view of a group of containers of-my invention, showing the manner of mounting and securing them for shipment.

Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view, taken on a line 22 of Fig. 1.

'l'he device comprises a substantially rectangular sheet metal container 3, carrying a flange l, around the edges thereof adjacent the base 5. The flange 4t extends beyond the base 5 and provides protection therefor and the base 5 and flange l of one container provides a close fitting cover for a second such container when placed upon the second container. Suitable fastening means such as rivets 7 may be used to secure the flange 4 upon the walls 6 of tae container. The upper edges 8 of the walls 6 of the containers are inwardly turned about stay rods 9 for providing a strong smooth edge; ventilating holes 100 are located in the upper portion of the walls 6. A suitable flange lid 10 serves as a closure for the container and may be provided with an angular bracing strip 11 along its inner side and longitudinally central thereof. Each container 3 is provided at its opposite ends with suitable handles 12.

As a means for securing a number of these containers together to form a unit I have provided on each Wall 6 of each container, a flanged lug 13 secured by means of rivets Ll. Thelugs 18 are uniformly mounted on each container 3 so that perforations 15 therethrough will register. The lid 10 carries lugs 16, having perforations 17 adapted to register with perforations 15 in lugs 13. Rods 18 having an angular extension or flange 19 at one end and having a threaded end 20 are adapted to be inserted through theperforationslo in lugs 15 and "perforation 17 in lug 16. The rods 18 are insert'et through the registering perforations in the lugs on the containers and the lid, theiiange 19 on the rod abutting the lug on the lowermost container and the threaded end 20, extending through the 1ug 16 on the lid 10. A wing nut or thelike 21, having any suitablegripping means .reon, is tl n mounted on the threaded. end 20 of the rod 18 against lug 16. on the lid. As nuts 21 are tightened on the rod 18, the containersarc tigl'itly' clamped, one upon the other and the lid 10 is also clamped upon the uppermost container. The unit thus formed may be expeditiously handled by means of the handles 12 on the containers.

Attention is directed to the fact thata device has thus been provided wherein water plants may be packed With sufficient water to sustain them and wherein necessary ventilation is attained. Additional water inayfibe put into the containers thru the ventilating holes by-means of a hose or sprinkling can, so that the plants may be shipped or stored for indefinite periods without nec ssitating the disassembling oi the unit. By supplying rods 18 in various lengths, the units may be built up to C0111 prise any desirable number of containers, one lid 10 being required for each unit. A single container may be used in stores for display purposes while the remaining units, with growing plants therein, stored away in a small space.
