Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD EDWIN MEATYARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of North Battleford, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Dominion of of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iceless Milk-Coolers, of which the following is the specification.

Thi invention relates to coolers particularly adapted for use of liquids such as milk or other edible articles constituting household stores, and the objects of the invention are to dispense with the use of ice, to simplify and render the construction compact thereby occupying a minimum of space, to permit of ready access to the cooler so facilitating in placing articles therein or withdrawing. them therefrom, to provide adequate ventilation while at the same time preventing insects coming in contact with the goods in the cooler and contaminating the same and generally to adapt the cooler to better perform the functions required of it, and it consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved cooler comprising the outer water container 10 inclosing the inner goods container 11 which is immersed to near the top in the water. The construction of the container 10 is quite unique and in the embodiment illustrated comprises bottom and top disk shaped members 12 and 13 around the periphery of which the canvas or like fabric lateral member 14: takes and is suitably secured thereto to form water tight joints.

The top member 13 is provided with a concentric orifice 15 through which the goods container 11 is adapted to pass and is further provided on its upper face with a plurality of horizontally disposed U-shaped catch members 16 arranged adjacent to the periphery of the orifice and on diametrically opposite sides thereof.

To facilitate in inserting and removing the goods container 11 from the liquid container 10, a lid 17 is inserted in the orifice 15 and provided with a plurality of down wardly disposed and offset resilient clips 18 adapted to embrace the top of the goods container, and to render this operation being easily accomplished I preferably pivotally mount one of the clips 18 to the lid 17 and extend the offset upper end therethrough to slidably engage the slot 19 in the pivotally mounted locking plate 20 carried by the lid.

The lid 17 is secured in engagement with the top member 13 of the water container 10 by a plurality of offset tongues 21 rigidly mounted on the lid and adapted to cooperate with the U-shaped catch member 16, while to provide ample ventilation for the goods container 11 and at the same time prevent insects from entering therein the center of the lid is formed with a piece of wire meshing 22.

The lid 17 also carries a suitable hand grip 23 rigidly attached to the upper face thereof, while to facilitate in suspending the cooler a bail 24 is provided adapted to be secured pol he upper member 13 by eyelets 25 or the In the use of the cooler the container 10 is first filled with water whereupon the goods container 11 carrying milk, butter or the like edible articles is attached to the ofiset resilient clips 18 of the lid 17 whereupon the locking plate 20 is rotated in a vertical plane to engage the upper offset end of one of the said resilient clips, thereby locking the upper end of the goods container 11 in engage ment with the said lid. The goods container is now passed through the orifice 15 and inserted into the container 10 where it is immersed to near the top edge in the water when the lid 17 is given an anticlockwise rotary motion to engage the offset tongues 21 with the U-shaped catch member 16.

The cooler is now suspended in a draft from the bail 24 and as the current of air plays upon the porous lateral member 14: of the container 10 the water in the said container is evaporated and the heat of evaporation being extracted from the water thereby cooling the goods in the container 11.

It will be readily understood that when a cooler of this description is not in use the collapsible nature of the same would permit within the scope of the of its being packed in a minimum of space So commending itself to the use ofpeople living in country districts.

As many changes could be made in the above invention and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A cooler of the class described including a lid, a plurality of resilient clips depending therefrom for detachably securing a food container to the lid, one of said clips Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of 'I'atents,

having a curved upward extension passing through the lid, and cam means carried by the plate for acting upon said extension to lock the container in position.

2.' The device of claim 1 with the addition that the cam means comprises a pivoted apertured plate having a V shaped projection adjacent the aperture for engagement with the upward extension of the clip passing through the aperture in the plate.
