INDEX TAB.
Application filed July 29,
.7 10 all 107mm t may concern.'
'Be it known that I, JAMns H. RAND, a ci( irren of the United States of America7 and relident of North Tonawanda, in the county of -lingers and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in ndex Tabs7 of which the following is a specification.
ihis invention relates to index 'abs particularly adapted for index holders of the type having index material on opposite taces and objects are to provide an index tab simply constructed, inexpensively manufactured and having the novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described; and to mount the tab on a holder in such a manner to permit relative sliding movement therebetween although prevent accidental separation therefrom.
@ne preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated on the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a fragmentary elevation of an index holder and tab mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l;v
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tab;
Fig. i is a perspective view of the sheath; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the index slip.
The drawings show an index holder A of the type adapted to receive index material on opposite faces and a tab B mounted on one edge of the holder A arranged for sliding movement thereon. The tab is provided with indicia on opposite sides thereof to indicate the index material contained on opposite sides of the holder. This is particularly advantageous when the holder is in the form of a double faced panel mounted for swinging movement on a frame or support to be manipulated somewhat after the manner of leaves of a book because the user of the index is enabled quickly and readily to determine the location of the material he desires after an inspection of the tabs. In such a case the tabs are arranged in staggered relation to present all of them to view, this arrangement being conveniently eifected owing to the Slidable engagement between the tab and holder.
More particularly the double faced panel A of sheet metal comprises a rectangular back 1 to the opposite faces of which 1924. Serial No. 728,878.
doubled strips are spot welded adjacent the longitudinal margins and transverse strips 5 are spot welded thereto adjacent the end margins serving as reenforcements therefor. index elements such as cards, slips or sheets having suitable indicia there on according to the subject matter of the index are inserted into opposed guide channels 4 formed between the strips 2 and the back l. The longitudinal edges of the back i are bent or rolled inwardly to form oppositely positioned longitudinally extending rounded projections 6 which extend beyond the folded margin of the strips 2. Secured in one of the projections 6 are pintles 3 fo-r mounting` the panel vfor swinging movement in a suitable frame or support, and an index tab B is mounted for longitudinal sliding movement on thc opposite projection.
The index tab B comprises an inner folded sheet metal strip 7 and an outer shorter folded .sheet metal strip 8, the two strips being secured together by spot welding in the region of their folded edges leaving the ends free. Grooves S) provided in the inner strip 7 extending transversely thereof in opposed relation are adapted to engage opposite sides of the rounded projection 6 of the panel A and the ends of the strip extend between the doubled strips 2 and the. back l. LIn this manner the tab is mounted to slide upon the panel but is prevented from accidental separation therefrom owing to the interengaging parts described.
Mounted on the outer strip 8 is a sheath l() of transparent sheet ceiluloid having inturned lips ll which enclose the ends of the strip 8 to prevent transverse movement of the sheath from the tab. The sheath l0 is free to slide longitudinally over the strip in order to insert or remove index slips 12 which have suitable indicia thereon arranged in such a manner that when folded over the strip 8 may be seen through the transparent Celluloid sheath from opposite sides thereof. The indicia on the index slip indicates the index material on opposite faces of the panel A and may be arranged to suit the needs 0f the user.
An index tab constructed as described is extremely inexpensiif'e to manufacture and is strong and practical for the purpose required. It will be obvious that minor details ot construction and arrangement may be chan .d Without departing 'from the spirit ot' the invention.
l claim:
l. An index tab comprising an outer folded strip, an attaching` strip fixed to the inside oit said strip in the region of the told, a sheath of transparent sheet materil on said 'folded strip i'en'iovable therefrom, and an index slip visible through said sheath.
rin index tab comprising an outer folded st Lp, an inne-r folded attaching strip havingits outer t'olded edge secured to the inside ot' the outer tolded strip adjacent its told, a Celluloid sheath folded over said outer strip and slideable longitudinally thereon, anduin index slip in said sheath having on opposite sides therco't' indicia visible through said sheath.
il. ,-"in index tab comprising an enter folded strip having 'free end portions, an inner tolded strip secured to the inner side oit the outer strip in the region ot its fold for mounting the tab, an index slip it'olded over said outer strip arranged to he visible from opposite sides thereot, and a transparent sheath on said outer strip enclosing said index slip having li )s on opposite ends to enclose the margins oi the tree. ends oi said enter strip to prevent transverse movement ot the sheath but permitting longitudinal sliding movement thereon.
ln an index device, a holder 'tor displaying index material on both sides, a tab mounted on the edge ot said holder and slideable thereon, a sheath of transparent niaterial folded over one edge of said tab and slideable longitudinally thereon, said sheath having` means cooperable with said tab preventing relative transverse movement therebetween, and an index slip in said sheath having indicia on dii'lerent portions thereof indicative otlv the ineex material on opposite sides ot the holder, said slip being arranged i said sheath to display portions ot said indicia on opposite sides ot the holder.
5. ln an index device, a double-faced holder tor displaying index material on both sides, a l'olded attaching strip mounted on the edge ot said holder arranged to slide thereon but prevented trom movement transversely thereof, a folded strip lixed to said attaching strip, a sheath of transparent inaterial 'folded over said retaining strip constructed to slide longitudinally thereon, and an index slip in said sheath having indicia of the index material on opposite sides of the hold-rA- the indicia on said slip being arranged to be displayed on opposite sides ot the holder.
6a in an index device, a holder tor displaying index material, an index tab having an inner tolded attaching strip and an outer folded strip mounted on the edge of the holder and slideable longitudinally thereon, a movable sheath enclosing the folded portion ot said outer strip` and an index strip in said sheath having indicia on diliierent iiortions thereof arranged to be visible through the opposite sides oiE said sheath.
7. in an iinlex device, a holder' tor disirlaying index material, an index tab having.r an inner attaching strip and an outer 'folded strip, interengaging means between said tab and holder to permit relative .slidinaj movement therebetween but prevent accidental disengagement ot the tab from the holder, a Celluloid sheath on said retaining strip having lips enclosing the outer lace margins oi sait. st ip to prevent transverse movement thereof: and an index slip in 'd sheath having indici?. on diterent portions thereo;t whereby when folded over said outerl strip indicia is visible through said sheath on opposite sides ot the holder.
8. In an index device, a holder for displaying index material having opposed guide channels adjacent one edge, a rounded projection on said holder extending longitudinally of said edge and overlying said channels, an index tab slidably mounted in said channels and having` opposed tansverse grooves engaging said projection thereby preventing movement ot said tab transversely ot said holder.
9. In an index device, a holder for displaying index material having opposed guide channels adjacent one edge extending longitudinally thereot, a strip between said channels having a rounded edge extending the length of the holder outside ot said channels, an index tab including a folded attaching strip having opposed transverse grooves, the end portions ot the strip arranged in said channels and the grooves engaging said rounded edge thereby permitting relative sliding movement between the tab and holder.
Signed by me at loston, Massachusetts, this 28th day ot July, 1925i.
