To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STANLEY ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Boston, county of Suii'olk, State of M assachnsetts, have invented an Improvement 1n Guide-Cards for Card-Index Systems, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to guide cards for card index systems, and particularly to the tab portion of said guide cards. The ob]ects of the invention are to provide a novel tab portion which is practically indestructible, which presents the indicating matter thereon in position to be conveniently read, and which is so constructed that the member con taining the indicating matter may be removed from the tab and replaced by another indicating member bearing different data, thus making any card adapted for universal use.

In order to give a proper understanding of the invention I have illustrated herein some selected embodiments thereof which will now be described after which the novel features of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.

The guide card is shown generally at 1 and may be of any suitable material. My improved tab comprises a holding member which is preferably of metal and whichis attached to the card and is formed with a tubular holding portion having an opening therein, a transparent sheath inserted in said tubular portion and exposed through the opening, and a core having an indicating member wrapped thereabout and inserted into the tubular sheath. The holding member willwpreferably be made of metal, and if the card 1 is made of metal, as some guide cards are, then the holding member may be formed integral with the card. Where the guide card is of paper or cardboard, or similar material, then the holding member will be separate from the card. This is the construction shown in the drawings and the preferred form of holding member is shown separate in Fig. 2. It comprises a body portion 3 which is adapted to overlie the card 1 and is secured thereto, and a tubular holding portion which is provided with the two cylindrical portions 4 that are separated from each other to provide a sight opening or space 5. This holding member may conveniently be made from a piece of sheet metal which is died out to the proper shape and is bentinto the shape shown in Fig. 2.

in the illustrated embodiment of the invention the two cylindrical holding portions -1 are connected by the cross bar 6. Situated within the holding portion is a tubular sheath 7 of transparent material, celluloid being a suitable material for this purpose. This sheath receives the indicating member which is in the form of a slip of paper 8 having the name or other data thereon which is wound around a core 9. This core is provided with a longitudinal groove 10 adapted to receive one edge of the paper 8, as seen in Fig. 5. The core with its indi cating member thereon is removably sustained by the sheath 7, and the sheath in turn is supported by the holding member. The indicating member is, therefore, interchangeable, and one indicating member can be removed from the tab and another inserted with great facility.

The purpose of the groove 10 is to facilitate the wrapping of the indicatin member about the core 9. In carrying out t is operation a person will insert one edge of the indicating member 8 into the groove 10 and then roll the core and indicating member between his thumb and finger thereby firmly wrapping or rolling said indicating member about the core. The groove 10 serves to hold the indicating member in its correct position during this operation and prevents any liability of the parts becoming displaced.

The holding member may be attachedto the card in any suitable way without departing from the invention. As herein shown said holding member has struck up its therefrom two sets of fin ers l1 and12, which fingers are inserted t rough the card 1 and are then folded over against the face of the card. I will referably make these fingers 11 and 12 so t at the fingers 12 fold upwardly, while the fingers 11 fold downwardly. The extremity of the fingers 12 when the latter are folded into their clam-ping position comes substantially to the top of the card, while the extremity of the fingers 11 when in their clamping position extends down about opposite the lower edge 13 of the holding member. By this construction both the top and bottom edges of the holding member are secured firmly to the card so that there will be no danger of the card and holding member opening away from each other at such edges.

In Fig. 7 I have illustrated a slightly different form of the invention wherein the tubular sheath is rovided with an extension 20 that overlies t e front face of the card 1 and is clamped thereto by the fingers l2 and 11. This merely makes an additional means for securing the sheath in place. In other respects the invention shown in Fig. 7 is similar to that above described.

My invention is inexpensive to manufacture and extremely easy to manipulate when in use. It also afi'ords means for providing an interchangeable indicating member and one which presents the reading matter thereon in the most convenient position to be read.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a guide card, the combination with a card, of a tab therefor comprising a holder having a skeleton tubular holding portion. a tubular sheath of transparent material sustained by said holding portion and visible therethrough, and a cylindrical core isiao ii removably held by said sheath and having an indicating member wrapped thereabout.

2. In a guide card, the combination with a card, of a tab therefor comprisin a metal holder having a body portion over ying and secured to the card and two separated cylindrical portions extending above the card, a tubular sheath of transparent material supported by said cylindrical portions, and a core having an indlcating member wrapped therea'bout and removably received in said sheath, the data onthe indicating member being visible through the sheath between the cylindrical portions of the holding member.

3. In a guide card, the combination with a card, of a tab therefor, comprising a holder having a body ortion overlying a portion of said card and a plurality of sepa rate cylindrical portions extending beyond the edge of the card, an open ended tubular sheath of transparent material removably supported by said cylindrical portions, and a core insertible through the open ends of said sheath, said core having an indicating member, wrapped there about and visibly held in contact with said sheath.

4. In a guide card, the combination with a card, of a tab therefor comprising a holder having a body portion overlapping and secured to the card and a holding portion projecting above the card, a tubular sheath having a closed front face of transparent material and secured in the holdin portion and an indicating member in sai tubular sheath.
